Word from the Commissioner

I would like to personally thank and congratulate all the people who have made this season possible so far (you should, too!) and all those who will make this the best season of QH AYSO soccer ever.  That list includes every one of our hard working volunteers (Board Members, Coaches, Referees, Team Parents and their spouses), the
parents and guardians of all our 1800+ players, and all the family members and friends that will come out to watch the games and cheer in support. Thanks to each and every one of you!  Thanks for allowing your children to play AYSO soccer in Quartz Hill and being a member of our family.

Each member of our QH AYSO family - parents, players, referees, and coaches - have the responsibility of contributing positively to the player's experience and the experience of all involved.  Please read the Code of Conduct for Parents, Players, Referees, and Coaches included below and our Zero Tolerance Policy:

As an AYSO parent, you have a special role in contributing to the development of your soccer player(s). Through your encouragement and good example, you can help ensure the effectiveness of the AYSO program, and more importantly, help your son or daughter have a wonderful soccer experience. AYSO is famous not only for our great volunteer coaches and referees, but also our supportive and positive parents. As the fall season approaches, we wanted to remind you all why you're special!

Players play!!!   Coaches coach!!!   Parents cheer!!!

Thanks

Code of Conduct
Be A Good Sport

AYSO has always encouraged good sportsmanship in its programs. In fact, "Good Sportsmanship" is one of the six philosophies listed in the AYSO National Bylaws. AYSO strongly recommends that its individual Regions promote good sportsmanship through dynamic programs.

Elements of these programs may vary from Region to Region, but all define the conduct of players, coaches, referees and even parents. They explain the fundamentals of good behavior-which is simply showing courtesy and respect for all involved in the game.

We figure that if players, volunteers and parents understand what is expected of them when it comes to good sportsmanship, that's probably how they will act. AYSO is proud of its many good sports, but understands that good sportsmanship doesn't just happen. It needs to be taught, encouraged and demonstrated.

Parent's Code

As a parent, you have a special role in contributing to the needs and development of these youngsters. Through your encouragement and good example, you can help ensure the effectiveness of the AYSO program.

Support Your Child

Support your child by giving encouragement and showing an interest in his or her team. Help your child work toward skill improvement and good sportsmanship in every game. Teach your child that hard work and an honest effort are often more important than victory. Your child will be a winner, even in defeat.

Always Be Positive

Parents are not participants on their child's team. However, they do contribute to the success experienced by their child and the team. Parents serve as role models for their children. Applaud good plays by your child's team and by the opposing team. Support all efforts to remove verbal and physical abuse from youth sporting activities.

Be Enthusiastic and Supportive

Let children set their own goals and play the game for themselves. Be careful not to impose your own standards and goals on your child. Don't put too heavy a burden on your child to win games. Surveys reveal that 72 percent of children would rather play for a losing team than ride the bench for a winner.

Reinforce Positive Behavior

The best way to help a child to achieve goals and reduce the natural fear of failure is through positive reinforcement. No one likes to make a mistake. If your child does make one, remember that he or she is still learning. Encourage your child's efforts and point out the good things your child accomplished.

Let Coaches Coach and Refs Ref

Coaches and referees are usually parents. They volunteer their time to help make your child's youth soccer experience a positive one. They need your support, too. What coaches and referees don't need is your help in coaching from the sidelines. So please refrain from coaching during games and practices. Referees are not the "bad guys." They are volunteers, too, and need your support and encouragement. Treat them and their calls fairly and respectfully.

Player's Code

  • Play for the fun of it, not just to please your parents or coach.
  • Play by the Laws of the Game.
  • Never argue with or complain about referees' calls or decisions.
  • Control your temper. Most of all, resist the temptation to retaliate when you feel you have been wronged.
  • Concentrate on playing soccer with your best efforts. Work equally hard for your team as for yourself.
  • Be a good sport by cheering all good plays, whether it is your team's or your opponent's.
  • Treat all players as you would like to be treated.
  • Remember that the goals of the game are to have fun, improve skills and feel good. Don't be a showoff or a ball hog.
  • Cooperate with your coaches, teammates, opponents and the referees.
  • AYSO has always encouraged good sportsmanship in its programs. In fact, "Good Sportsmanship" is one of the six philosophies listed in the AYSO National Bylaws. AYSO strongly recommends that its individual Regions promote good sportsmanship through dynamic programs.
Referee's Code
  • Always remember that the game is for the players. Player safety and fair play come first.
  • Study and learn the Laws of the Game and understand the "spirit" of the Laws. Help fellow referees do the same.
  • Encourage and enforce the AYSO philosophies of "Everyone Plays," "Positive Coaching" and "Good Sportsmanship."
  • Respect other referees' decisions, and do not publicly criticize another official.
  • Wear the proper uniform and keep it in good condition.
  • Maintain good physical condition so you can keep up with the action.
  • Stay calm when confronted with emotional reactions from players, coaches and parents.
  • Honor accepted game assignments. In an emergency, find a replacement.
  • Support good sportsmanship with a kind word to players, coaches and parents of both teams when deserved.
  • Always be fair and impartial, avoiding conflicts of interest. Decisions based on personal bias are dishonest and unacceptable.

Coach's Code

  • Enthusiastically support and practice the "Everyone Plays," "Good Sportsmanship," "Positive Coaching" and "Player Development" philosophies of AYSO.

  • Be reasonable in your demands on a young player's time, energy, enthusiasm and performance on the soccer field.

  • Impress on your players that they must abide by the Laws of the Game at all times.

  • Develop team respect for the ability of opponents, and for the judgment of referees and opposing coaches.

  • Ensure that your players' soccer experience is one of fun and enjoyment (winning is only part of it). Players should never be yelled at or ridiculed for making mistakes or losing a game.

  • Set a good example and be generous with your praise when it is deserved. Children need a coach they can respect.

  • Keep informed of sound principles of coaching, growth and child development.

  • Check your equipment and playing facilities. They should meet safety standards and be appropriate for the age and ability of your players.

  • Follow the advice of a physician when determining when an injured child is ready to play again.

Thank You Header

The QH AYSO Board would like to thank each and every volunteer that came out on field painting day!  We truly appreciate the hours you each gave on a holiday weekend to prepare the fields!

COACHES CORNER

Welcome to the start of the 2016 Quartz Hill AYSO season.   I hope you are all ready for a fun and exciting season.   I know everything is hectic the first week so here are a few reminders to make sure things go a little more smoothly.

1.   You should have received two game cards at the Coach Orientations.  In addition, there will be two additional game cards in your coach folder on Saturday.   Make sure to get there a little early so you have time to fill it out prior to the game.  If you can't find the coach folders please ask someone.  Board members will be in their Blue and Gold board shirts.
2.   Fill out your game card in jersey number order.  Make sure you list everyone on your roster including players who may be absent this week (just indicate they are absent by writing absent next to their name on the game card).
3.  In U10 and above, make sure to check your game card at the end of the match to ensure the score and substitutions are correct.  If you are satisfied, sign the game card.  Remember once you sign the card it is official.  Don't forget to indicate up to three players of the game by circling there jersey number on the front of the card.
4.  U6 and U8 coaches, make sure your cards are legible and clearly indicate who sat out each quarter.  If you have questions, don't hesitate to track one of us down at the fields and ask for some assistance.  Remember to indicate up to three players of the game by circling their jersey numbers on the front of the card.  Don't forget to score your opponent for sportsmanship on the back of the card.  NOTE U8 Coaches:  we also ask you to watch the players on your opponent's team and indicate on your card their three top players that game by noting their jersey numbers in the space indicated on the card.
5.   HAVE FUN!

In a current issue of the PLAYSOCCER they listed the top 10 reasons why coaching in AYSO is perfect for you. I thought I would share these with everyone in case you missed the article.
  1. Spending time with your child
  2. Getting the training you need
  3. Making a lifetime impression on children
  4. Being part of something special
  5. Making a new circle of friends
  6. Building you own confidence
  7. Creating a better world
  8. Showing the players how to have fun
  9. Volunteering keeps AYSO affordable
  10. Exercising and enjoying the great outdoors

U6/U8 Soccer Drill of the Week
Sharks and MinnowsSharksandMinnows
Setup
Build a grid approximately 20X25 yards this field should be adjusted based on the skill level and number of players participating. Each player should have a ball except for 2 sharks.

Instructions
The players with balls (the minnows) attempt to protect their ball from the two "Sharks". The Sharks attempt to gain possession and knock the minnows (ball) out of the grid. Once this happens, the minnow can run around the grid once and return to the game. Each minnow has two changes, and the last 2 minnows remaining become the sharks in the next round.

Variations
  • Players only use left foot to dribble.
  • Players use outside of feet to dribble.
  • Players use sole of feet to dribble.
Coaching Points
  • Keep the dribblers under control and not panicked once the sharks get near them.
  • Inform players to keep the ball close within playing distance.
U10/U12/U14 Soccer Drill of the Week
Four Corners Passing GameFourCornersPassingGame2

Setup
Create four grids that are about 5x5 yard grids and set them about 40X40 yards apart on all sides. Split the group into two teams and put one team in an alternate color.

Instructions
Instruct the teams to pass among their team to keep possession while attempting to score a point by passing the ball to a teammate that is inside one of the smaller grids. The teams can score in any of the corners; however, they cannot score in the same corner twice in a row.

Variations
  • Do not allow players to stand inside the grids waiting for a pass. Instead, instruct the players to work on timing of the runs and timing of the pass to connect inside the grid.
  • Change the scoring rule to where the goal is scored only when a give and go is performed with the player that is in the grid.

Coaching Points
  • Focus on the weight and accuracy of the passing
  • Make sure players without the ball are supporting the player with the ball at all times
  • Make sure the timing of the runs and timing of the pass are in sync.
  • Make sure players change the point of attack and are not forcing passes into congested areas

REFEREE NEWS

Welcome Back!

The 2016 season is ready to kick off and hopefully our 170+ referees from 2015 have dusted off their whistles.  We added 28 new referees during our first two summer classes.  Many of our new and returning referees had the opportunity to try out some new positions during our Labor Day Sunday scrimmages.  We ran U10, U12 and U14 scrimmages with new and returning referees who received some personal mentoring from some of our more experienced refs.  Thanks to the coaches, players, referees and mentors who made this event a big success.  See you all on the fields!!

BECOME A REFEREE: It is the best seat in the house!

Ref Uniform

Interested in becoming a referee and helping out your child's team?  There is still time!   We have a one day class on Sunday, September 25th.  We are in need or more volunteers to make sure all our games have trained referees.

For details on how to signup, go to our website www.qhayso.org and click on referee information.  Questions?  Call John at 878-3280.

All teams in U10 thru U14 need to obtain at least 7 referee points just to be considered for post-season play.

A team can earn up to 2 points a week from any Referee who chooses to donate the referee points they have earned to them.  Referee points are earned as follows:

U8 Referee: ½ point
U10-U14 Assistant Referee: ½ point
U16-U19 Assistant Referee: 1 point
U10-U19 Referee: 1 point

Every year we have a friendly competition to see who can do the most refereeing.  This contest is already in full swing as a bunch of dedicated Quartz Hill referees have made trips out to Apple Valley and to the Lancaster National Soccer Center to referee Upper Division U16 and U19 games between teams from all over the Antelope Valley.  With the regular season just starting, there is still plenty of time to add your name to the leader board.  Here is our current leader board:

ATTENTION YOUTH REFEREES

We will once again be having our competition for our youth referees this year.  We will be awarding prizes to our top male and female youth referees who go out and take on the most U-8 games this season.  Look for your name in the standings in the weekly newsletter.  Let the competition begin!

     Sponsors
Quartz Hill AYSO would like to thank our Sponsors for the 2016 Season!   The donations from our sponsors allow Quartz Hill AYSO to provide soccer scholarships and help to keep our registration fees affordable so that everyone can play. It is clear that without the generous support of businesses and individuals, Quartz Hill AYSO Region 638 could not continue to offer our children such a well-rounded soccer program at such an affordable price.  We thank our wonderful sponsors for their support and ask our players and their families to support these sponsors whenever possible in return!

SAFETY REMINDER
U10 COACHES AND SPECTATORS - FIELDS 2 and 3

We need your helping keeping things SAFE for our
PLAYERS and ASSISTANT REFEREES.

On Lower Joe Walker, we have re-positioned Fields 2 and 3 this season to create space enough for easy-ups between the two fields but still need the cooperation of all spectators to please always sit to the left of their center-line.  Following this simple request will allow the spectators on both fields to be the required 3 yards from the touchline, the assistant referee will not be in danger of tripping over a spectator AND your spectators will not have the assistant referee constantly running right in front of them.
HEADING RULE CHANGE

AYSO has changed its rule for heading in accordance with the U.S. Soccer Federation's (USSF) Return 2 Recover program.  The new rule bans heading for all U-12 and below division players. Heading for players in U-14 will be limited to a maximum of thirty minutes per week with no more than 15-20 headers, per player.  There is no restriction on heading in matches in U-14 and above. The new policy includes that an indirect free kick will be awarded to the opposing team if a player in U12 or under, deliberately touches the ball with his/her head during a game. Safety is very important to AYSO as a whole. Heading was already banned for U-10 and below and extending it to U-11/U-12 was a way to ensure that players are older and more developed when attempting heading to avoid preventable head injuries.
