Bachelor's Degrees within the STEM Fields, 2014

This month's map highlights degree holders with a bachelor's degree or higher in a field related to Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM).
Overall, 22.7% of bachelor's degree holders in the state held a degree in STEM fields while the CSU Chico Service Region held a larger percentage of degree holders with a degree in STEM at 25.5%. This may be due in part to the North State's demand for careers in natural resources rather than financial or liberal arts that may be demanded in other regions of the state.

CedCED AT WORK

Community Strategic Planning Workshops

This past month, our Director of Research, Michael Suplita, Project Specialist, Meagan
Weaver, and Research Assistant, Charity Zimmerman, facilitated a series of community strategic planning workshops in the southern Sierra.  The CED was recently contracted by The Central Sierra Economic  Development  District (CSEDD) to help complete the regional Comprehensive Economic Development Strategy (CEDS) for the counties of Alpine, Calaveras, Mariposa, and Tuolumne.

Michael, Meagan, and Charity drove out to each of the four counties and facilitated three community outreach meetings to discuss strengths, weaknesses, opportunities, and threats facing the region. The CED strives to provide learning opportunities for their student researchers, and this was a great experience for Charity as she was able to engage with the communities that the CED works with and take part in the community discussions.

Main ideas that came out of the community meetings included:

  • Advancing existing visitor services and increasing tourism infrastructure.
  • Coordinating marketing efforts between counties to promote tourism in all counties.
  • Advancing regional airports for shipping and business growth purposes.

Further discussions with community leaders are currently taking place to continue working on a plan for further economic growth in the region, but the feedback received from the meetings has provided significant insight into what needs to be done moving forward.
