The Skokie Home Scoop - September 9, 2016

Dear Skokie Families,

It was so wonderful to see so many of you join us for Go To School Night on Wednesday evening.  While it was a toasty evening, it was nice to visit with so many of you, welcome you into our building, and hear how the school year has started for your families.  That evening I spoke about the importance of the partnership that exists between a school and the families it serves.  For our fifth grade families, the transition from the elementary school to Skokie can be a daunting one in that you are graduating from a place which you have called home for five years.  Your family had the luxury of getting to know the staff over a number of years, and potentially see several of your children through its classrooms.  These two years at Skokie are fleeting ones, but nevertheless impactful, as they open the window to a series of pivotal years in a child's life when the most change, even evolution occurs.

It is important to recognize that Skokie is not a true middle school, despite the fact that we do fall right between our elementaries and Washburne.  Our 5th and 6th graders spend the majority of their school years here between the ages of 10 and 11, and as such we are an upper elementary.  It may seem unimportant to consider whether a middle school or upper elementary is associated with our school; however, it has everything to do with how we design our instruction and what types of expectations and standards are developmentally appropriate for these ages.  Another important consideration is that our students join us at the entree into adolescence.  So many of the new concerns, questions, interests and worries that come with this age can be troubling to address as a parent at times, but are very much a part of our repetoire as Middle School Educators.  Please come to us with your questions and concerns, and engage us in the partnership we so hope to have with you.  As these years are such fleeting ones, it is our hope to form that partnership quickly, knowing that we share a commonality:  wanting the very best for your child.

Please enjoy this weekend together with your families.  We look forward to seeing everyone back on Monday!

Most Sincerely,

Kelly Tess
