FEATURED ACTIVITY:  Korean Janggu Drumming
This year, music teachers from Quatama, Lenox, Free Orchards, Brookwood, Imlay, and Lincoln Street Elementary Schools will be learning about Korean Janggu drumming, and will then pass it on to their students. In May, the Hillsboro Schools Foundation awarded these teachers a grant for the purchase of instruments to make this drumming unit possible. The grant recipients and their students will be investigating ways to share their new skills with the community.

Academic Program Development Meetings Continue
All interested students, staff, parents and community members are invited to attend one of the upcoming community forums on academic program development. These meetings allow stakeholders to provide input on their values and beliefs regarding academic outcomes and how we can best create rigorous, relevant offerings for all students. Meetings this week are at Hilhi on Monday, Sept. 19, from 5 p.m. to 6 p.m.; and at Liberty on Thursday, Sept. 22, from 5:30 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. Both meetings will take place before back-to-school night at those locations.

Last Chance to Register for the Career and College Summit
There are still a few seats remaining at our Career and College Summit on Tuesday, Sept. 27, from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. at the Walters Cultural Arts Center, so  register today! Sample food made by our very own Century High School Culinary students, learn about the work that's already under way, and talk with staff, students, and other stakeholders about how we can create clear and viable pathways for our students.

Creating and Sending Messages in Synergy
Our Synergy student information system is where we keep and update all official information for students and their parents/guardians. This makes Synergy's messaging capabilities an ideal way to reach out to parents. Here are some tips for creating those messages: 1) include the name of your school/classroom in the subject line to let people know the origin of the message (especially for those with children at more than one school); and 2) either type messages into the tool directly, or attach a PDF of the message -- do not cut and paste from a Word document as your message will lose all formatting and will squish together. The latter is especially important for Spanish messages; accent marks and other special characters don't always convert and will come across looking very strange to the recipient. If you need assistance with Synergy messaging, please contact your Site Technology Coordinator or the Synergy Helpdesk.
