Register Now - CalOHII State Health Information Guidance Stakeholder Meeting

The California Health & Human Services Agency Office of Health Information Integrity (CalOHII) is developing an official State Health Information Guidance (SHIG) on sensitive patient health information. This tool will provide non-mandatory guidance to state and local governments, providers, health information exchange entities, and other stakeholders on the use, disclosure, and protection of sensitive health data related to behavioral health, substance abuse, HIV/AIDS, and genetics.

The goal of this guidance, which will be published in June 2017, is to advance understanding of state and federal health information privacy, security, and patients' rights laws related to sensitive health information; facilitate the appropriate exchange of sensitive health information; and better inform conversations about care coordination, including behavioral health integration initiatives at the state and local levels.

CalOHII is holding a stakeholder meeting to explain the project's purpose and scope, and seek input to prioritize specific topics and issues to be addressed in the SHIG.  This facilitated meeting will garner input and feedback from all attendees.

Date:            Wednesday, September 14, 2016

Time:           8:30 to 3:00

Location:    Sierra Health Foundation, 1321 Garden Highway, Sacramento, CA

Who Should Attend?
Those with knowledge of issues and barriers to successful integrated care and appropriate sensitive health information sharing and who wish to contribute to the development of the State Health Information Guidance.

This meeting is invitation-only: if you cannot attend but would like to recommend someone else from your organization, please contact Elaine Scordakis at [email protected].

This project is supported by the California Health Care Foundation, based in Oakland, CA.
Free access to Kognito Mental Health and Suicide Prevention Simulations to the First 100 Individuals!

September is Suicide Prevention Awareness Month and educators can play a key role in identifying students in distress and connecting them with support. To help build educators' skills and self-confidence in doing just that, The California Department of Education and Kognito are offering 100 free licenses for Kognito's At-Risk series of online professional development simulations for educators. These licenses (one per user) are available on a time-limited first come, first serve basis and will be available through October 31st, 2016.

Click here and fill out the form to reserve yours.
Available through October, 31st 2016

Kognito's At-Risk for PK-12 Educators is a series of online professional development simulations where learners take on the role of a teacher who is concerned with some of their students. Tailored by grade level, the simulations help learners build their skills and self-confidence by interacting with virtual students and a virtual parent (elementary version only). Studies demonstrate that At-Risk:
  • Increases educators' ability to identify, approach and refer students exhibiting signs of psychological distress, including depression, anxiety and suicidal ideation
  • Gives educators the confidence to engage and manage difficult conversations with students
  • Develops awareness of negative stereotypes and misconceptions about mental distress and illness
  • Increases the likelihood that teachers will intervene when faced with a student at-risk for psychological distress and suicide
Access to Kognito's At-Risk is for a limited time and will be limited to the first 100 individual applicants. Each simulation takes about 1 hour to complete.

For more information on Kognito, please visit www.kognito.com or call 212-675-9234.

Reporting NAMI Education Program Data

Reporting the data collected from classes, support groups and trainings to the NAMI Data Collection Site is extremely important. Reporting helps NAMI California provide more data to obtain funding so that we can provide trainings for NAMI's Signature Programs. We understand that navigating the reporting site can be challenging, but we are here to help if any assistance is needed with navigating the Data Collection Site. If you have any questions or need any assistance, please do not hesitate to contact NAMI California at (916) 567-0163.

Hello NAMI Program Directors,

Election 2016 is in full swing and NAMI grassroots advocates have a crucial role to play in telling candidates for federal, state and local office - across all parties - that voters care about mental health.

Keep in mind that NAMI organizations are nonprofits. While election education and engagement activities are allowed, there are some restrictions. Attached is what to do-and what not to do-as a volunteer, Board Member or staff member.

Feel free to share the Memo to Leaders with anybody who has any questions. NAMI National also received some questions about elections and volunteers/staff who lead Education Programs and Support Groups. Please see the responses below.

What if I volunteer as a NAMI Support Group Facilitator or NAMI Education Teacher/Trainer?

* As a NAMI facilitator, teacher or trainer, you represent NAMI and serve as a role model when you volunteer. As a result, you should not wear pins, stickers or visibly identify with specific candidates or political parties and should not publicly express your opinions on candidates or political parties while serving in your volunteer role.  When you are done fulfilling your NAMI role, such as after class, you are free to express your political views.

What if a participant brings up a candidate or political party during a support group or education program?

* If a participant is experiencing symptoms as a result of a candidate or political party, focus on the feelings and not the candidate or political party.
* If a participant brings up a political party or candidate absent any symptoms, treat the comments like any other time when a participant is off-topic-bring the individual and the group back on topic.

Thank you for all you do and please let Jessica Hart know if you have any questions.
