So, Why a Community Endowment?
|

Nine years ago I considered it a privilege to accept the opportunity to lead the Greater Green Bay Community Foundation. Prior to joining the Community Foundation I had led large cultural institutions whose assets were real and important community treasures. I learned how to work with those assets so that they helped those institutions serve the community. What attracted me to the community foundation model was their tool chest including their most important tool- the Community Endowment.
Community Endowments reside in community foundations operating in more than 800 locations across the country. These endowments are built and shaped by community donors and investment performance. They provide annual funding, growing enough every year, so that ever increasing funds are available to invest in community opportunities and challenges. Why would that concept attract someone like me who had had opportunity to work with important cultural assets that were real?
The answer lies in the ability of the fund to be forever relevant to the needs and opportunities of the community and are always evolving. The Community Endowment is focused on the place it is meant to serve. Greater Green Bay, including Brown, Kewaunee, and Oconto counties have a growing fund to support the greatest and ever changing needs of the community. The Community Endowment is dynamic in its ability to pivot to the relevant needs the community identifies. The legacy of the endowment's use is credited to those donors who have chosen to give back to the place we refer to as Greater Green Bay and that legacy will help inspire others to give back too.
When you open a Fund at the Community Foundation, you are joining with a growing community of donors interested in building a Community Endowment that will serve this place, and the people and things we love about it - the Greater Green Bay Community.

What Gives
Scholarship Awards
The Community Foundation will administer more than $270,000 in educational assistance through our scholarship programs this year.
604 students have applied for awards ranging from $500 to $40,000. These endowed scholarships serve students with an interest in math, music, education, basketball, bowling and more. The awards provide opportunity for students who have financial need, exceptional skills or other potential. There are opportunities for students at all levels pursuing higher education.
These scholarships are created by donors interested in leaving a lasting legacy, memorializing loved ones, strengthening the workforce or supporting our future leaders. We look forward to seeing what these students can accomplish!

Spotlight on Grants
Greater Green Bay Mental Heath Connection
The Greater Green Bay Mental Health Connection is a developing local initiative with a mission to improve the mental health of the community through collaboration, education and enhanced systems of care. Some of their initial work will focus on smoother client access to mental health care, a "warm" hand off for clients between organizations, and the identification of evidence-based best practices.
The collaboration -- including American Foundation of Counseling Services, Bellin Health, Brown County Department of Human Services, Catholic Charities, Family Services of Northeast Wisconsin, Hospital Sisters Health System (HSHS), Prevea, local school districts and others -- is consulting and learning from models from Fort Worth, Texas, and Appleton. The initial three years of this initiative is being funded by a grant from the endowed U.S. Venture Fund for Basic Needs and the Basic Needs Giving Partnership.

Community Agenda
The Community Foundation is partnering again with the Greater Green Bay Chamber and Brown County United Way to spearhead the 2016 Leading Indicators for Excellence (LIFE) Study of Brown County.
The purpose of the study is to understand the current quality of life in our community within ten primary sectors. The report will offer a comprehensive, timely synopsis of objective data, opinion surveys, and expert panel feedback on key areas of our community.
The Foundation will utilize the completed LIFE Study to align and allocate resources to better the community and achieve greater impact.
The St. Norbert College Strategic Research Institute will conduct the survey work, and the University of Wisconsin-Green Bay Center for Public Affairs will serve as the research consultant on the project.
The report is a follow-up to the 2011 LIFE Study and is scheduled for publication in early 2017.

Leaving A Legacy
There are many ways to invest in our community, one is to invest in its future. Establishing a endowed Legacy Fund is a way to provide long term support of the causes you care about. A Legacy Gift is any new named designated, field of interest, unrestricted, or scholarship fund either contributed or pledged at $10,000 or more. It also includes any fund established as part of your estate.
In the last few years the Community Foundation has received a total of 54 new legacy commitments. This speaks to the values of our community and highlights the unique ability of the Community Foundation to help support causes you care about for generations to come. We are hosting Bryan Clontz, national speaker and President of Charitable Solutions, LLC. He will present sessions throughout the day to three different audiences - professional advisors who work with clients interested in charitable giving, donors interested in making their giving more impactful, and nonprofit organizations who want to improve their work with donors. Young Professional of the Year
Amber Paluch, our Community Engagement Program Officer, was named the Young Professional of the Year at the annual Current Young Professionals Awards on February 18th. Amber was selected by her peers for the award based on her extensive community involvement and impact. Current, the Greater Green Bay Chamber's young professionals organization, organizes the annual awards ceremony, which highlights young professionals making a difference in the community.
