It's going to be a hot time in Omega this weekend as the 13th Annual Omega Pepper Festival gets  underway.

The festival starts tonight (Friday) with an opening ceremony, BBQ and gospel sing beginning at 5:30 p.m. at Ponder Park. The gospel sing will go on until 10 p.m.
The annual parade at 10:30 a.m. Saturday kicks off a full day of festivities, including kids' amusements, arts and crafts, food vendors, NWA Georgia Extreme wrestling and music provided by Hatcher Station, Tyler Hogan, the Flint River Band and Justin Dukes.
And, of course, peppers will be available.

'Driftin' the Night Away'

Thursday night in the ballroom at the
UGA Tifton Campus Conference Center.
The event, sponsored by the
Tifton-Tift County Public Library Foundation, raises money for programs, services and materials at the local public library.
The group, members of the
Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, sang many of their hits, including "Under the Boardwalk," "Up on the Roof," "On Broadway," "Save the Last Dance for Me," Spanish Harlem," "This Magic Moment," and "Stand By Me."
Unable to sit still, many of the guests got up and danced along with the
music.

$2.3 MILLION GRANT WILL HELP
MIGRANT WORKERS GET GED
|
The High School Equivalency Program (HEP) in the Office of Multicultural Education at Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College recently received a $2.3 million grant renewal for the next five years.
Olga Contreras-Martinez, assistant director of the HEP program, said the grant was awarded by the U.S. Department of Education from the Office of Migrant Education.
"Every five years, ABAC has to submit a proposal for the renewal process," said Contreras. "It is very competitive. We also have to meet previous grant goals in order to be considered."
The funding will be used to assist migrant and seasonal agricultural workers in obtaining the equivalency of a high school diploma; in Georgia, that is the General Education Diploma, or GED.
"There are very few programs like this in the state," Contreras-Martinez said. "It gives students the opportunity for a better life."
The HEP program has been administered at ABAC for 15 years. With its fourth renewal, 75 more students per year will receive a GED and mark the 20th year of the program.

The Tiftarea Academy Varsity football team recently collected donations for Louisiana flood victims. The team collected multiple boxes of cleaning supplies, paper products, toiletries and cases of water during a week-long donation drive.

SECRETARY OF STATE ADDRESSES ROTARY
Ga. Secretary of State
Brian P. Kemp spoke to the
Rotary Club of Tifton on
Wednesday and said that the state is prepared for the
November general election. Kemp said reports of hacking into voting machines across the nation
have been blown out of proportion. He also said the voter identification requirement in
Georgia is a non-issue in the Peach State.

This two-day training was developed specifically for FFA members and advisors to strengthen their floral design skills and build confidence in their own creative ability. The training was led and sponsored by members of the Georgia State Florist Association along with donations from many floral companies from across the nation.
The partnership between the middle and high school agriculture programs and the Georgia State Florist Association plays a fundamental role in preparing students through hands-on experiences for future careers in the floral industry.
FFA -- Future Farmers of America -- is a national organization of more than 601,000 members preparing for leadership and careers in the science, business and technology of agriculture. FFA is an integral part of the agricultural education program in public schools. The FFA mission is to make a positive difference in the lives of students by developing their potential for premier leadership, personal growth and career success through agricultural education.

finalists from around the  country. A Food Network judge will select the winner based on creativity, healthy content, originality and presentation.

TIFT REGIONAL WELCOMES EIGHT NEW PHYSICIANS
Tift Regional Health System (TRHS) announced that eight new physicians have joined its medical staff. The specialties represented include anesthesiology, hospital medicine, neurology and obstetrics/gynecology.
The new physicians include anesthesiologist Nora Fine, M.D.; hospital medicine doctors Ali Araghi, M.D., Nugma Chadha, M.D., and Vince Faridani, M.D.; neurologist Deborah Stokes, D.O.; and,
obstetricians/gynecologists B. David Baddour, M.D., Rana Khalek, M.D., and Ana Hernandez, M.D.
Dr. Nora Fine is an anesthesiologist serving surgery patients at Tift Regional Medical Center (TRMC). She earned her medical degree from the University of Minnesota in Minneapolis and completed residency training at Dartmouth-Hitchcock Medical Center in Lebanon, N.H. Dr. Fine is board certified by the American Board of Anesthesiology.
Dr. Ali Araghi, Dr. Nugma Chadha and Dr. Vince Faridani practice with Affinity Hospital Medicine and
provide care for patients who are hospitalized at TRMC. Dr. Argahi, who specializes in critical care hospital medicine, holds a medical degree from the Kermanshah University of Medical Sciences in Iran. He completed residency and fellowship training in pulmonary medicine, critical care and sleep medicine at Wayne State University in Detroit. Dr. Araghi is board certified in internal medicine, pulmonology, critical care and sleep medicine. Dr. Chadha and Dr. Faridani earned their medical degrees from the Saba University School of Medicine in the Dutch Caribbean. Dr. Chadha completed her internal medicine residency training at the University of Kansas Hospital in Kansas City, Kan. Dr. Chadha is board certified in internal medicine. Dr. Faridani completed his internal medicine residency training at the Virginia Tech-Carilion Clinic in Roanoke, Va., and is board certified in internal medicine.
Dr. Stokes has joined Affinity Clinic in Tifton and specializes in neurology, providing the diagnosis and treatment of conditions such as Parkinson's disease, multiple sclerosis (MS), stroke, Alzheimer's disease and other neurological disorders. She is a graduate of the Michigan State University College of Osteopathic Medicine in East Lansing, Mich. Dr. Stokes completed residency training in neurology at Oakland General Hospital in Madison Heights, Mich. Dr. Stokes is board certified in Psychiatry and Neurology.
