Calling FEA Scholars: November 16, 2016

We're seeking fifteen FEA Scholars to attend our November 16 Gala in Washington, DC and help our donors connect to our work increasing access to study abroad.  If you're interested in attending and talking with guests about your experience abroad, please email Michelle Foley, FEA's new Program Coordinator. We'll accommodate travel and lodging arrangements for your trip to DC if you're currently in the U.S. and have not attended our gala in the past.  Watch YouTube star Kemushican interview some of last year's attending scholars who studied in Japan.

If you can not attend, please consid er giving a gift in support of FEA's mission to increase access to education abroad. This year's event also includes a raffle drawing of a trip for two to Cuba, sponsored by  National Geographic Expeditions  and  Academic Travel Abroad !

Sarahann Yeh is our new FEA Alumnus Member of the Board!
Congratulations, Sarahann! Sarahann is a member of the 2013-2014 FEA Scholars  cohort, having studied abroad in China in the spring of 2014. She is a recent graduate from the University of Maryland, where she studied Biological Sciences with a minor in International Development and Conflict Management.  She will be the voice of FEA Alumni in board meetings for the next two years, and will work with FEA to improve our Alumni programming and outreach efforts.

From Courtney Steele - Nagoya, Japan - " EXCURSION TO INUYAMA CASTLE AND MEIJI-MURA" 

"Hello again FEA! I've been in Japan for a little over  two weeks now and I've done and seen so much in such a short amount of time! For this blog post I wanted to focus more on a trip I took to Inuyama (犬山) with my new coworkers, and boss!

Firstly, allow me to explain my new part time job! I have been given the opportunity to work at a cram school in Gamagori as an assistant language teacher to Japanese students between the ages of six and twenty. I work with the owner of the school, and we are the only two who understand English so it's very difficult for me sometimes! However, that's why I am here, isn't it? To immerse myself! I'll admit it's got its challenges, but I'll discuss those another time! For now, here are some photos of my trip to Inuyama Castle!"

From Michael Clark- Gulu, Uganda- " THE SEMESTER (AND THE ADVENTURE) BEGINS"

"The semester begins for my Post-Conflict Transformation program in Northern Uganda but not before I had the opportunity to explore the local market and move in with a host family.

We've just completed our first week of the new semester and I am both exhausted but excited for the what's coming up. Last Monday our class traveled from Kampala to Gulu, in the north of Uganda. It was a 7 hour drive and was not without incident when shortly after crossing the Nile River, our van was attacked by baboons! In a well-coordinated ambush, two baboons blocked our van by laying in the middle of the road forcing us to stop. When we did, two others came from the side and jumped on top of our van. They were after the pineapples we had recently purchased. Luckily they were tied down but one baboon still got away with a few big bites before he jumped off and ran back into the jungle."

FEA Outreach & Scholarships Intern:  We are looking for an Outreach and Scholarships Intern!
Title: Unpaid Outreach & Scholarships Intern, Fund for Education Abroad

Hours: Between 15-25 hours per week, during regular business hours

Description of the Internship

The FEA Outreach & Scholarships Intern position was created in response to FEA's increasing growth. The intern will assist the Program Coordinator to communicate with key study abroad/international education contacts at universities and colleges across the country to ensure that all advisors and eligible students know of FEA scholarships for the 2017-2018 cycle. The intern will also serve as a point of contact for students/advisors/recommenders who have questions about the scholarship application process.
Major benefits for the intern include gaining important knowledge of nonprofit administration, access to training in marketing and communications, and a network of committed International Education professionals. Because FEA is small-staffed organization, interns will get hands on experience in a variety of areas and will have the opportunity for meaningful involvement in shaping the direction of the organization.
FEA believes strongly in the principle of providing interns with structured responsibilities, clear direction, and useful evaluation. FEA expects this position to provide the intern with relevant skills and training as well as important feedback.

Responsibilities
Contact Research & Outreach
 Coordinating the digital and physical mailing of scholarship flyers to universities, colleges, and study abroad providers
 Communicating with applicants/advisors/commentators and answering questions about the application requirements & process via phone and email

Skills:
 Strong organizational and research skills
 Excellent communications skills and good writing skills
 Confident, professional manner in dealing with clients and colleagues
 Unflinching attention to detail
 Facility with Microsoft office
 Passion for International Education
 Ability to work with minimal supervision
