Zika Update
September 9, 2016

Dear Residents, Businesses and Visitors,

Today we have received information from the Florida Department of Agriculture that another pool of mosquitoes has tested positive for the Zika virus.

We have received confirmation that this pool is inside the current zone and is not outside of this area.

Despite relentless efforts by the city and the county, this new discovery shows that the Zika threat continues to grow. Today's announcement reinforces the need for us to continue being as aggressive as we can be against Zika. City staff will continue working closely with state and county officials to ensure that we are doing everything in our power to protect the health and well-being of our residents, businesses and visitors.

In light of the recent news, the CDC sent the following statement:

CDC is encouraged by the commitment made by the government of Florida to protect pregnant women from Zika virus. Because of the very real risk Zika poses, we must use the most effective ways to protect pregnant women. Aerial spraying has been used in the continental United States, including in Florida, for decades, and is an important vector management tool to rapidly reduce the mosquito population in the current circumstances. Action is needed now to protect women in Florida from the devastating impact Zika can have on pregnancy, and CDC supports Florida in their efforts to take this action.  Aerial spraying is only a part of a comprehensive mosquito control and Zika control program that also includes eliminating standing water, providing DEET to pregnant women, encouraging pregnant women to wear long sleeve shirts and long pants and stay inside in screened or air conditioned space to the extent possible, monitoring mosquito populations and mosquito resistance to insecticides, providing effective voluntary contraception to women who choose to delay pregnancy, and other measures.
