Dear students and educators,

It's hard to believe that summer is almost over, but before we head into the 2017 Scholastic Awards season, I'd like to thank you all for the outstanding 2015-16 award year.

Last year, the NYC Region received more than 10,000 submissions from talented teens across the five boroughs! New York City students earned 58 Gold Medals for their art and writing and the NYC Region was selected to be highlighted in a special exhibition in Washington, D.C. Thirty Gold Key works created by New York City students will be displayed from September 16-October 31 at the Department of Education. What a fabulous way to wrap-up the 2015-16 season! We're looking forward to an even more incredible 2016-17.

The 2016-17 New York City Scholastic Art & Writing Awards will again be administrated by the Alliance for Young Artists & Writers in partnership with Parsons School of Design and Eugene Lang College of Liberal Arts. We are also working closely with The Metropolitan Museum of Art to coordinate the exhibition of Gold Key work for a third year. I will be in touch over the upcoming months with news about events hosted by our partners that you are invited to attend.

Registration for the 2017 Scholastic Awards opens on September 14. Here's what you need to know:

Category Updates
We've made changes to the categories for 2017. I strongly recommend reading through our categories page to find out if you need to make adjustments to your submission. Students are responsible for submitting their work to the proper category.

The most important criteria students must consider when submitting to the Scholastic Awards isoriginality. Work submitted to the Scholastic Awards must be original content created by the student submitting the work. Educators and students can download a short explanation of what we mean by Be You! Be Original!for review before submitting work to the Scholastic Awards. And be sure to check out our   Copyright and Plagiarism Guide before finalizing submissions

Educators play a critical role in providing guidance throughout the submission process. With the support of educators, we can eliminate disqualifications due to plagiarism and/or copyright infringement.

How to Submit
Submitting work to the Scholastic Awards is quick and easy. Follow these steps to participate in the 2017 Scholastic Awards:

  • Create an account at  artandwriting.org/login.
  • Upload your work to your account.
  • Print and sign submission form(s).
  • Obtain the signature of a parent/guardian and educator for each submission form.
  • Calculate submission fees ($5 per submission) based on the number of works being submitted. Payment may be submitted online or included with the submission form(s).
  • If the total submission fee poses a financial challenge, print a fee waiver for each submission form. Each fee waiver must be signed by the student and a parent/guardian.
