Sports fans of the world, unite!

--Andy Dolich

During the holidays, our inboxes overflow with requests asking us to give. Today's economy challenges all of us in allocating our philanthropy to those who are having a rough go of it. We are lucky puppies to live in a place that has it all, and sometimes we take it for granted. Many of us spend time and money supporting community organizations that are devoted to enhancing the lives of our fellow citizens.

I have a simple request, whether you live in the Bay Area or anyplace else in the country: I want that shirt at the bottom of the pile. Over the past two years I have been lucky enough to partner with the St. Anthony Foundation and Comcast SportsNetwork Bay Area to create a simple program that will warm the recipients--and your heart. It's called One Warm Shirt.

We are collecting as many sweatshirts and hoodies as possible to donate to the community served by San Francisco's St. Anthony's Foundation. You are receiving this request because we know you have sweatshirts that have been around far too long. Think of this as early spring cleaning!

Please send what you have ...

* New or gently used

* All sizes

* From the bottom of your drawer, storeroom, irregular pile, gym bag,

   attic or basement

* Misprinted logo bin

* Your inventory of traded-player shirts

* Material that isn't up to your hipness

* Teams that no longer exist

* Players you've forgotten

* Logos too garish for your sense of style

* Colors that don't match your eyes

The distribution event will be a part of a post-holiday lunch to be served to the recipients on Thursday, January 15th. If you would like to participate personally, contact Rochelle Reuter at [email protected] for details. Shirts should be sent or delivered by Jan. 2, 2015, to:

St. Anthony Foundation

Rich Yee - Raiders - 2014

Raiders on a
roller coaster?

--Richard Lupoff

Friends:

I'm pretty sure I saw what I think I saw and I know what I saw. However, I really don't know what to make of it. The Raiders looked like a solid football team. No spectacular performances. No 90-yard touchdown runs, no 60-yard rainbow passes, no 75-yard punts, just good, solid, tough football in all departments. These are the same Oakland Raiders who beat the Kansas City Chiefs, then were absolutely humiliated in that 52-0 shellacking in St. Louis. On Sunday everything clicked.

I'm not ready to deify Tony Sparano, but I really do believe that the turnaround came when the Raiders canned Dennis Allen and promoted Sparano to interim coach. Now they're talking about hiring Harbaugh or Jon Gruden. I think they ought to drop the "interim" from Sparano's title.

Look, these are the same players who went oh-for-whatever for Allen and for a whole parade of predecessors. Once Sparano took over they started looking like a somewhat respectable team, even though they were still losing. Then they started to win. What happened to them in the Rams game? Who knows?

If today's Raiders are the real Raiders, they'll be playoff contenders next year. Too bad the turnaround came so late in the present season, but they can be spoilers for the remaining few weeks of the season.
