PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Dear Lakeview Families,

With the last of our parent-teacher-student conferences wrapping up today, the Jog-A-Thon completed, and our LEAP professional development day tomorrow, it feels like the school year is officially up and running! Before you know it Thanksgiving and Winter break will be in the rear view mirror and we will wonder where half of the school year went. That is why the goal setting that was completed during conferences is so important as focuses home and school as a team working to help your student climb to new heights.

This Friday is an all-day LEAP professional development day for our teachers. I worry that we sometimes do not do a good job communicating to our families and communities what we are accomplishing on these dedicated professional development days. Tomorrow we are meeting in the morning with 7 other LWSD elementary schools in the Kirkland area in grade level/content area groups to kick off a multi-year collaboration around curriculum and pedagogy. It will build us into a team that extends beyond Lakeview that is striving for the best practices and content for our students. Then in the afternoon, teachers will be focusing on technology in the classroom, particularly the standards the district has set for each grade level for instructional technology.

So I can assure you, though you students are at home tomorrow, we will be hard at work improving our collaboration and skills to better serve our students.

Thanks - Steve

CALLING ALL STUDENT ARTISTS!
IT'S REFLECTIONS TIME AGAIN!

The Reflections Program is a National PTA and Washington State PTA cultural arts competition. The purpose of this program is to provide an opportunity for students to use their creative talents to express themselves through their own original works of art.

Each year, Reflections challenges students to create art that supports a specific theme. Themes are selected from thousands of ideas submitted by students to National PTA's Reflections Theme Search.

The 2015-2016 theme is:   " Let Your Imagination Fly. "

A student may submit an entry in any of six arts areas. Only original works of art are accepted. The six art areas are: Literature, Music Composition, Photography, Visual Arts, Film/Video and Choreography/Dance.

Entry forms are available through your teacher or in the magazine rack in the school lobby.

PTSA-Sponsored Art Instruction
with Mrs. Lustgarten

Here is the run-down of what Mrs. Lustgarten has been helping our students create this fall.

5th grade - Zentangle Letters
Students started with a square tile and learned 4 common tangles, each with a name. They then applied what they learned with these 4 tangles their letter or shape and learned more tangles to fill the interior spaces. Some even added borders.

4th grade - Hopper Haunted Houses
Artists then used resource sheets with doors, windows & rooflines to construct their impossible haunted houses, redraw on flat styrofoam sheets then using a brayer and black ink they made a print of their haunted house.

3rd grade - Complementary Symmetry
After choosing and folding a complementary piece of paper, students cut irregular and organic shapes from the folded papers with a final result of a cut design that was symmetrical.

2nd grade- Pumpkins in Perspective-Oil Pastel
They outlined with black oil pastel, filled in pumpkins with orange and grass with green. They created a light source (the moon) and noticed how it shined on the pumpkins. We added white & black to indicate the reflections on the pumpkins.

1st grade- Painted Pumpkins in Perspective
Using the primary colors of red, yellow & blue students mixed secondary colors of orange, green & violet. Students also learned to mix a brown for the stems by mixing complementary colors-orange & blue.

Kindergarten - Tree Painting
Artists learned about "warm colors" and used red, orange and yellow watercolors to create a sunrise color wash background for their tree painting.

You can view lots of examples of this beautiful artwork on the PTSA website: http://lakeviewptsa.org/2015/10/14/art-program-latest-news/
