PRINCIPAL'S CORNER

Dear Lakeview Families,

First of all, what a tremendous multicultural night we had Thursday evening! Thank you to our students, parents, teachers, and volunteers who make this celebration possible. Appreciating heritage and diversity is a critical life lesson and celebration is a fantastic way to teach that to our students and our community as a whole. We are stronger for the cultures and traditions that make up the rich Lakeview tapestry.

Second, you may have noticed in the last month or so when you email me on certain days you get the following auto-reply: "Thanks for reaching out to me, today I am out in classrooms and away from my computer." I have worked to dedicate two days each week to being out of the office and out in classrooms to fully focus on teaching and learning. That does mean I may not always be able to speak with you when you drop by or call, however, I really do value communicating with you. So, when you need to speak with me, please contact Ms. Frey, our office manager, who will schedule a time for us to talk.

We have a great week planned next week, with essential learning and community-building activities. Please encourage your students to show up fully ready to work, learn, and connect in our final week before winter break.

Thanks - Steve

Help Wanted

The PTSA is still looking for someone to take on the role of Advocacy Chair--in a nutshell you would be helping Lakeview deal with the issue of overcrowding that is expected to become a bigger problem in the next few years.  If you would like to find out more about the Advocacy Chair position, please contact Tana or Ivana at lakptsapresident@gmail.com.

We are also need a couple more parent volunteers to help with this year's carnival event.  The carnival is always a favorite here at Lakeview but we need some help in pulling it all together!  We are still looking for two more parents - one to manage the team of volunteers and one to oversee the entire event.

We need to have our leads identified prior to the winter holiday break session so that there is enough time to set the date, manage all the planning and execution of the carnival.  If we don't have the leads in place, we won't be able to have this event this year.  If you are interested in one of these roles, please reach out to PTSA Special Events Chair Susie McDonald.

To read more about these and other volunteer positions, you can check out volunteer section of the PTSA website.

Winter Wishes 2015

Winter Wishes, a Lakeview tradition, allows the community to show they care by helping families share in the joy of gift giving and receiving during the holiday season.  Marcee Ben-Menachem, our school counselor, confidentially facilitates gathering the wishes from our Winter Wishes families and delivering the gifts to them.  Lakeview students, with their parents, then select one or more of the gifts and fulfill them for these families.
Beginning on Monday November 30 th through Friday December 11 th, gift tags will be available for pick up both before and after school in the front office.
Forms were set home with your child this week.  If you are unable to come with your child, you may fill out the form giving them permission to select an item.   You can also purchase items online on the Lakeview Elementary Winter Wishes Amazon wish list.
Bring all items unwrapped to school office on or before December 14 th.  (They are donated to a local charity after this date).  We will also have a collection area at the Lakeview Multi-cultural Night.  Please return all gifts with their original Winter Wishes tag attached with the family number and gift number.

Sign up for School Closure Alerts

With the potential for more power outages with tonight's high wind warning, please consider signing up for school closure alerts from https://www.flashalert.net /. This system is the first place that our school district's closure and delay information is posted. It covers school closures and delays for all schools in the Puget Sound area. It's also where the news media gets their information.

You can sign up for email and/or text alerts via a phone app. (Those text alerts can come in handy if you have a home phone that doesn't work in a power outage.) Those notices will get to you well in advance of the district's automated phone calls, which take longer to set up and complete.
