BMOA Project

Over the summer, Garces began working on one of the 33 mini-trucks for the Bakersfield Museum of Art's "Driven By Art" project. Garces Art Instructor, Mr. Mark Brown recruited some of our very best student artists and they have created a "Van Gogh Recycled" project utilizing items like plastic bottles, aluminum cans, and pull tabs.  In the photograph are students putting on some of the finishing touches before the truck is delivered to the BMOA.  They are Cherry Wang, Kimberly Mielke, and Desera Olmos with Mr. Brown.  Other students who worked on the project are:  Olivia Wooner, Belen Cazares, Vedant Vaidya, Kathryn Koenig, Francesca Shattuck, Maggie Waguespack, Lee Begin, and Kristen Vibal.  The truck will be unveiled to the public at the Exhibition Opening and Press Conference at the Bakersfield Museum of Art on Monday, September 19th at 10:00 AM. Our Garces artists are grateful to Garces alumnus and Alumni Board Member, Melissa Fortune '72, for sponsoring the truck.

Message from
Blaine Geissel
Director of Student Services  & Alumni Relations

We are in full swing now! I pray you enjoyed Back to School Night and meeting with all your student's teachers. The staff enjoyed meeting all of our parents and we fell blessed to work with such awesome families. Things are happening here at Garces and we are about to go crazy with Holy Bowl next week. The days to look for are next Friday the 16th to attend the Holy Bowl Night Rally. Come hungry as there will be food for sale starting at 5:00 along with games, music and face decorations. The rally starts at 7:00.

Saturday the 17th, will be non-stop action with tennis, volleyball, water polo and football on campus (check the website for all start times) and we wish golf and cross country the best of luck and are competing off campus that day as well. Please plan on coming up all day and cheering on our Rams. There will be food available for purchase by the pool between 11:00 and 4:00 consisting of pulled pork and tri-tip sandwiches, hamburgers, hot dogs, drinks and snacks. Thank you to the water polo teams for keeping us fueled up to get loud and support our student athletes.

I also wanted to send out some special encouragement to all Alumni of Garces. Please join the Garces Memorial High School Alumni Facebook page. I will use that as a platform for future events and to post Alumni News as well as pictures and videos of current happenings on campus. Check out the new video posted today promoting our Open House on Sunday September 25th. Please tell anyone who is interested in attending Garces to come up for a tour and information.

Lastly, That T-Shirt Co., the student run store will be selling lots of new gear at the Holy Bowl football game with more hats and new t-shirt and sweatshirt designs as well as other made to order items. If you want a Holy Bowl t-shirt please ask your student to purchase them for you as they are beautiful and sure to sell out when they go on sale Monday the 12th.

Have a blessed week.

Sincerely,
Blaine Geissel
