"The small class size meant that there was a lot of personal attention to both dog and handler. Both Laura and Sara knew us and our dog by name. They always had concrete advise for solving situational issues raise by those in the class. I like the approach with positive reinforcement. I had attended the opposite kind of training with choke collar and severe correction with our previous family pet, and this philosophy fits in and achieves the results in a humane way. Laura and Sara allowed time for questions - even with that initial wait for people to formulate their query. Class built on stepping blocks so that the dog (and handler) felt success in introduction of each activity." - Maureen M. and her Labrador Retriever Sirius reviewing their Beginning Reactive Dog Rehab class with trainers Laura and Sara

Pantalaimon practices his "leave it" skills in Leash Pullers Anonymous class

"I loved the skills practice in short little chunks, as well as the games we played. Pan loved the fact that you were his trainer! He smiles SO BIG when he sees you!" -Sara R. and her Jack Russell terrier cross Pantalaimon reviewing their Leash Pullers Anonymous class with trainer Sarah

"I like that there's more than the "traditional" obedience commands, that there's useful every day stuff, that instructors are willing to go "off book" to help wiht participant questions, etc. We loved the class! Keep it up!" -Anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Beginning Obedience class with trainer Laura

"We had a great time in class. Sarah had some great suggestions for things to do at home to reinforce recall. I enjoyed taking some of the activities outside to practice longer recalls." -Anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Rocket Recall class with trainer Sarah

"Shalise was fantastic! I felt so at ease and in sync with her training style. I have learned so much, and she has made me more confident in my continued training with my Maiko. I actually cant wait to work on the techniques she has taught me, where in the past I have dreaded training. I am much more comfortable with my dog out in public, and will most definitely continue with the tools Shalise has provided me with. These are things I had hoped to get from this training time. Thank you Shalise!" -Barb A. and her German Shepherd Maiko reviewing their private training package with trainer Shalise

"We had such a great experience with the Canine University! The trainers were extremely helpful and we noticed big improvements in our 1-year-old dog's behavior. We would definitely recommend this program to others. All of the counselors we worked with were really great. You can tell they really care about your dog's training and do a wonderful job. They were flexible and tailored the training to my dog. I felt very comfortable leaving my dog in their care. The homework handouts were also very helpful. I really enjoyed the recaps of each day and the pictures that were sent throughout the program. We just loved the whole program. Training was tailored to my dog and his strengths and weaknesses. The trainers were attentive and provided helpful feedback. We saw a huge improvement in our dog's behavior!" -Anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Day Camp experience

"I have taken classes from Patti before and she is always well prepared and keeps the class moving with a variety of activities." - Renee T. and her mixed breed Bentley reviewing their Therapy Dog Prep Course with instructor Patti

"Great training class, great handouts, great people. I'm really happy that we took this class - it made us better dog owners!" -Anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Beginning Obedience class with instructor Kera

"Katie and Denise did a fantastic job. The facility was nice and Katie is someone I would like to work with again. She understands both dogs and people." -Kari U. and her German Shepherd Rudy reviewing their Beginning Agility class with instructors Katie and Denise

"I am very grateful for these classes!!!" -anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Reactive Dog Rehab class with instructors Carrie and Kera

Ned

"This is such a great opportunity to play with our dogs in a totally different manner than many types of training classes. It's wonderful to explore movement with our companions in a creative and mindful way. I appreciate this opportunity to "be" with my pup in a kind, gentle, and respectful way, exploring movement and connection and joy together." -Sarala H. and her Labrador Retriever Ned reviewing their Introduction to CanineFreestyle DogWork class with instructor Kristin

"Patti's experience is just outstanding. She fine-tuned my dog for the evaluation. But sometimes I needed a drastic change for a better performance in my part as a dog owner. Therapy dog training is indeed human training.
"Patti is the best dog trainer I've had during a year and a half dog training. Her teaching style is like college teaching: well prepared syllabus and good weekly assignments." -Toshimi S. and his Miniature Schnauzer Simon Augustus, reviewing their Therapy Dog Prep class with trainer Patti

"I'm very happy with you and absolutely love you as our trainer. You are honestly one of my favorite if not my favorite so far. You have such great energy and motivation. I would love to get in more classes of yours." - Cassey M. and her Rottweiler Locket, email to trainer Kera regarding Beginning Obedience class (shared with permission)

"Good class size and ration of staff to participants. I like your classes and instructors!" -anonymous survey respondant reviewing their Dog Sport Foundations class with trainer Shelly

Lisa and Walter

"Both instructors were great! They were well prepared and very knowledgable, they were able to help me in several areas that I was struggling in with my puppy. I loved that we got individual one on one time in this class, it really helped with making the class work for our individual needs. This was the fourth class I took with my new pup and it has been one of the most beneficial by far. Both the trainers and the content were great and I have seen a noticeable difference in my pups ability to focus in exciting situations and recovery quicker when stressed by minor interactions. The games and relaxation protocol we learned are helping us to have an attentive well behaved pup in situations where we previously had a lovely but super excited and unfocused pup. We might take this class again just to continue with the positive progress we saw but I have already seen improvements in our day to day life." -Lisa C. and her Irish Wolfhound Walter reviewing their Beginning Focus & Control class with instructors Carrie & Shelly

As the summer winds down and fall is in full swing, it can be easy to get overwhelmed and let things slide. We've all been there! If you feel that you've been furgetting your furry friend with the flurry of activity, here are some quick tips to help you out (with apologies for the truly awful pun)!

  • The Kong Wobbler
Throw out the food bowl. Really! If you're short on time, dumping your dog's bowl is one of the best things you can do for your buddy. Instead, invest in some quality food-dispensing puzzle toys like the Kong Wobbler, PetSafe Tug-a-Jug, or Orbee Snoop, and feed your dog's meals out of these. These toys encourage your dog to exercise their brain and body and make mealtime an event (as opposed to a few seconds, in the case of my blink-and-you'll-miss-it chowhounds).
  • Stash treats and toys around the house. It's easier to train on the fly if you can reward your dog quickly, without a lot of prep time gathering supplies. Stash some rubbermaid containers of training treats or dog kibble on top of bookshelves or fireplace mantels, under your bathroom sink, in your wardrobe, next to the laundry detergent - basically anywhere you may end up throughout the day. Then, try to fit in quick 30- to 60-second review sessions with your dog once an hour when you're home. You'll be amazed at what you can accomplish! Not sure what to work on? Here's  a great list of things you can work on in one-minute bites.
  • Jax visits the garden center during a field trip at Day Camp.
Include your dog in errands and chores. Figure out some quick ways to include your dog in your day-to-day errands. Perhaps he could accompany you to the garden center to pick out some fall bulbs, ride along in the morning when you drop the kids off at school, or practice his leash manners when you walk out to the mailbox each evening. A trick-trained dog can even make your life easier by picking up their own toys, gathering dirty laundry into a basket, or fetching his own leash!
  • Set up a date night with your dog. Getting out of the house for some one-on-one time with you once a week can make a huge difference in your dog's happiness. We've packed our fall class schedule with lots of quick three-week-long classes to provide a fun outing without the commitment of a full six-week class. Check it out below!
