PRINCIPAL LETTER

Greetings World Compass Academy family,

As we start the new school year, I wanted to say a big thank you to everyone for their tremendous work getting the school started this year! With such a great team of staff, board members, and volunteers, the school is prepped and ready to keep their positive growth and energy rolling into the new school year.

I also wanted to pass along a few quick thoughts about starting a school year well. One key to a successful start for students is to remember that it takes focused skill and effort to listen and learn at school. This means that we need to remember to keep a good balance between play and work (which is especially challenging after a summer out of school). So don't forget to establish a good habit of working first and playing later (great advice that I have given to my new freshman daughter in college too)! Since research shows that it takes about 3 weeks to establish a habit, keep working toward your healthy school routines until they are established.

During the month of September, we have a school-wide focus on leadership. We are looking for students who are displaying the Cougar Essentials! When students are caught in the act of leadership, they will be rewarded with Cougar Cash. In turn, thanks to our PTO helping sponsor the "rewards store," our students will be able to redeem their Cougar Cash for fun prizes. Our Cougar Essentials challenge also extends to us as adults. We want to lead by example and be great role models of leadership for our students.

Thanks for helping us get off to a great start! I am looking forward to many more great starts for World Compass Academy!

Working together for our students,

September 13 is Picture Day and a FORMAL UNIFORM DAY!

A NOTE FROM OUR LIBRARIAN

Welcome back to the school library!

My name is Teri Stringer, and I will be the WCA librarian this year. Your children have already begun their weekly library visits, and we plan to have tons of fun and learn a lot this year! Please remind your child to take good care of their library books and to bring them back each week in order to be able to check out new books. Damaged or lost books will need to be paid for. Last year we lost about 10 books. :( Let's all do our best not to lose any books this year!

Watch for information over the next few weeks about volunteer opportunities. We are still accepting donations of books. At this time, we are limiting the donations to hardcover books in good shape. We also ask that science books not be more than 58 years old. If you have cardboard type preschool books, please check with the preschool teacher, Mrs. Harrison, to see if she would like them for her preschool library.

Many of you have asked about the Book Fair. We will be having a pirate themed book fair November 14-18. Watch for information in the coming weeks! I am looking forward to spending more time with your students this year and helping them continue their love of reading! If you have any questions, please send me an email

Thank you!
Teri Stringer

HEALTH UPDATES

Vision and Hearing ScreeningsVision and hearing screenings have been completed! If your child did not pass the initial screen(s), he/she was re-screened. If your child did not pass the re-screen, you will be notified via email by  September 15th . If you do not hear from our nurse, your child passed the screens. State screens were for Kindergarten, first, second, third, and fifth grades.

ImmunizationsImmunizations are an important part of our children's health care, and Colorado law requires that children going to school be vaccinated to prevent vaccine-preventable disease.  To be in compliance with the immunization law, children must meet one of the following:

● Be up-to-date on all required vaccinations and have paperwork on file with WCA.
● Have a signed medical/personal exemption form on file with WCA that is updated annually.
● Have an "in process" form on file with WCA. (A student is "in-process" and has 14 days to obtain the required immunization(s) and/or provide written documentation as to when those immunizations will be administered.)

Students are required to have Tdap prior to entry into 6th grade. One dose of Tdap is required for 6th through 12th grades.  Our school nurse, Jenny Garland , will let you know if we are missing any immunization records for your child.

Exemptions. Students who have exemptions will be excluded from school if an outbreak of a specified common disease occurs.
