A MESSAGE FROM THE RABBI

"Justice, Justice shall you pursue".  This phrase is at the beginning of this week's Torah portion, Shoftim.  It is the clarion call to be even handed and righteous in handling matters and making decisions.  It is appropriate that this should be the theme of the Torah portion.  Most of us will agree that when it comes to Israel, the world often does not treat our Homeland justly and righteously.  Indeed, Israel is consistently held to a standard that even the Garden of Eden could not have lived up to.

With this as the backdrop, it is propitious that I attended AIPAC's National Rabbinic Symposium this week in Washington.  More than 300 Rabbis, representing nearly the entire Jewish denominational spectrum, attended the event.  The conference provided the attendees with context and content in terms of Israel's position domestically and on the national stage.

Permit me to provide you with a little taste of what I experienced:

1)     On Tuesday evening we had a dinner reception in the Library of Congress.  If you have not yet been in this building, make plans to see it.  It is vast, and ornately appointed and contains historical and cultural exhibits that really should be seen in person.
2)     At the dinner Lawrence Haas the author of Harry and Arthur: Truman, Vandenberg and the Partnership That Created the Free World and Michael Doran, the author of Ike's Gamble: America's Rise to Dominance in the Middle East, had a forum discussion about America's assumption of world leadership after World War II.  Among the things I learned was that the Eisenhower administration took a pretty active anti-Israel stance, a position that, according to our speaker, Eisenhower later regretted.
3)     On Wednesday there were 4 plenary sessions, 17 breakout sessions and over 20 speakers. I learned Torah from a renowned Orthodox scholar, Rabbi Jacob J. Schacter.  I also attended one breakout session that helped to set a paradigm for discussing Israel from the pulpit, and another session that helped to provide tools for dealing with the Boycott, Divestment, and Sanctions (BDS) movement that is targeting Israel commercially and on our college campuses.
4)     At our Lunch session the Honorable Lindsey Graham (R-SC) spoke and answered questions. Most of us probably know that he is a very good friend to Israel. He was quite honest (sometimes bleak) in the information he provided; however, he did make a statement that I think is worth reporting.  When asked about defeating ISIS and Islamic Terrorism, he expressed a firm belief (I am paraphrasing here) that building a school to teach a child would do more to help a move to peace than a bunch of bombs being dropped on terrorists.
5)     Perhaps more important than the substantive learning was the ability to get together with a large group of diverse rabbis to share ideas and friendship.

This is a perfect time to thank the nearly one hundred folks who joined us at services back in July to hear from Jackie Kelly, AIPAC's NJ Associate Director. As Jackie highlighted, there are many issues that continue to threat the Jewish people and Israel.  The Talmud tells us in Pirkei Avot, "....If not now, when....?" Now is the time to get involved to grow and strengthen the pro-Israel movement so we can do as much as is possible in our lifetime to ensure that Israel stays safe and secure.

AIPAC (The American Israel Public Affairs Committee) has the sole mission to ensure that Israel remains safe and secure. AIPAC works with both Democrats and Republicans to lobby for legislation to strengthen the relationship between the United States and Israel so she has the ability to protect herself, by herself. The work of AIPAC'S activists has resulted in the Iron Dome technology and other missile defense systems, technology innovation and energy innovation throughout the United States and Israel.

I hope you'll consider joining me for AIPAC's Policy Conference in Washington, DC on March 26-28! Policy Conference is the Super Bowl of pro-Israel advocacy, when over 16,000 activists come together in our nation's capital to lobby on the US-Israel relationship. I have been to Policy conference several times and, as I have previously expressed, the Conference includes exhibitions of groundbreaking Israeli innovations; keynote speeches by world leaders and policy experts from both the United States and Israel; emotional and inspiring moments on stage, and intimate educational breakout sessions. And most importantly, the Conference allows us to make our voices heard through lobbying meetings with our members of Congress on the pro-Israel agenda. It would additionally be a tremendous experience to share with your children or grandchildren to show them how much Israel means to you.  Check it out for yourself - learn more about the conference and watch videos online here.

If you would like to join us for these impactful days - or even just for one or two of the days - I'd love to tell you more or you can get in touch with Jackie directly at 646-360-1513 or [email protected].

Shabbat Shalom - Rabbi Michael S. Jay

MORRIS L. SHAPIRO ENDOWMENT FUND
All organizations should have a substantial endowment fund to insure its continuation. Except for dire emergencies, the principal amounts in the fund cannot be used to run the organization. Interest earned from the account may be used.  As previously announced, Herb and Selma Shapiro have created a JCC  Endowment Fund to honor Herb's father. It will be known as  "The Morris L. Shapiro Endowment Fund at the JCC of LBI " The Shapiros have generously pledged a total of $50,000 to fund this. While initially established by the Shapiros, anyone may contribute to this important fund.

Join Herb and Selma in helping assure the continuity of our JCC, and our ability to continue providing a full-service congregation to serve the Jewish people of the area. All members are encouraged to help this important effort by contributing to this Fund.

Your gift to the fund can be sent to the JCC Office. Please mark your check accordingly.

AUDIO/VISUAL PROJECT
We are very excited about the decision of the Board of Directors to pursue the enhancement of the audio system for the JCC of LBI as well as the purchase of a projection system.  This multi-phased project will allow us to become a venue for expanded programming and opens us up to many wonderful opportunities for future planning.  Your gift large or small is much appreciated. Please send your contribution to the JCC office: 2411 Long Beach Blvd., Spray Beach, NJ 08008 and note on the memo line A/V Project.

SISTERHOOD STUFF
BOOK CLUB & REVIEW

Tuesday, September 13
10:30 AM in the Library
Book: "The "Bridal Chair"
by Gloria Goldreich

Beautiful Ida Chagall, the only daughter of Marc Chagall, is blossoming in the Paris art world beyond her father's controlling gaze. But her newfound independence is short-lived. In Nazi-occupied Paris, Chagall's status as a Jewish artist has made them all targets, yet his devotion to his art blinds him to their danger.

When Ida falls in love and Chagall angrily paints an empty wedding chair (The Bridal Chair) in response, she faces an impossible choice: Does she fight to forge her own path outside her father's shadow, or abandon her ambitions to save Chagall from his enemies and himself?

Brimming with historic personalities from Europe, America and Israel, The Bridal Chair is a stunning portrait of love, fortitude, and the sharp divide between art and real life.

SHOE BOX RECYCLING
We are again collecting gently worn, paired men's, women's and kids shoes that are still reusable and re-wearable (no ski boots, ice skates, roller blades, flip flops, crocs or bedroom slippers). Please bring them to the JCC during office hours.

"Let's clean up our closets and the environment by recycling our shoes."
