Move Over Summer, It's Time for Cyclocross
With Labor Day weekend behind us, we may have only just entered the "unofficial" start of fall, but fall cyclocross is already on our brain. In Chicagoland, the ever-fun xXx Relay Cross unofficially kicked off our season in August, with the Chicago Cyclocross Cup races soon following.

What's cyclocross, you ask? Higher Gear Chicago defines it as a form of bicycle racing  "onto a one and a half to two mile
course that crosses pavement, wooded trails, grass, gravel and steep hills, and those obstacles are now recreated with wooden barriers that require racers to quickly dismount and carry their bikes." It was originally designed as a sport to keep European road racers in shape during the autumn and winter season.

Below are some local races:
09/11 - LaBagh Woods - Chicago, IL
10/02 - Hopkins Park - DeKalb, IL
10/09 - Dan Ryan Woods - Chicago, IL
10/23 - ABD Sunrise Park - Bartlett, IL
11/06 - Psi-clocross For Life - Woodstock, IL
11/20 - Melas Park Basin Racin' - Mount Prospect, IL
12/04 - Montrose Harbor - State CX Championship

Mag Mile, Hot Chocolate, other RAM Races, Remain Popular Despite National Racing Trend
Often known for their special goodie bags and unique races, RAM Racing has worked hard to buck the trend of decreased race participation, and that hard work has paid off.

In June, Running USA released a report stating that for the second year in a row, race participation has decreased; between 2014 and 2015, participation went down 10 percent across the country, following the 23-year "running boom" where participation jumped by 14 million runners.

Increasing registration fees, rising popularity in studio fitness and lack of Millennial runners are all suggestions as to why the decrease in participation continues. Whatever the reason may be, RAM Racing has found a way around it, as it continues to see increasing participation numbers. How? Find out.

The Mag Mile, which is this Saturday, used to be a women's only half marathon -- now, anyone can run down the famous Magnificent Mile and get the awesome swag bag.

Want to compete this Saturday? It's not too late. Register here. Also, Fleet Feet is offering FREE medal engraving after the race at its Old Town location on Saturday from noon to 5 p.m. and Monday from 12-7pm.
SURPRISE: We have another Hot Chocolate 15K & 5K entry to give away!

However, this contest is a little more involved...

HOW TO WIN: Has running changed your life? Maybe it's led you to a healthier lifestyle, or introduced you to your closest friends? Whatever it may be, share your experience with us by sending a story on how running has shaped you as a person to [email protected].

The winner will receive a code for a free entry, and their story will be shared on our website. (Tip: our editor is a sap, so any tear-jerking stories may have an advantage) Good luck!

Last 4 Miles proposal on ballot in Edgewater
Voters in Chicago's 48th and 40th wards in Edgewater will get a chance to demonstrate support for extending the Lakefront Trail north to West Devon Avenue this fall.

The community-led proposal, known as the Edgewater Beachwalk, would create separated trail space for people walking and biking from West Ardmore Avenue - the current terminus of the Lakefront Trail - to Devon. Along this stretch would be new beaches, parkland, a boat dock and a dog park.

The Last 4 Miles Initiative is a campaign led by Friends of the Parks and supported by Active Trans, to add two miles of parkland to both the south and north lakefronts so all Chicagoans have access to the lakefront. This proposal covers an initial segment on the north end.
