Summer interns make their mark at the Port
June - August 2016

The Port of Oakland hosted 17 interns in the College Summer Internship Program and 6 high school interns from Oakland Mayor Libby Schaaf's Classrooms2Carrers providing professional work experiences in Administration, Aviation, Commercial Real Estate, Engineering, Governmental Affairs, Maritime, Communications, Social Responsibility and other areas of business. 

   

Port employee scholarship organizations surpass $1 million giving 
June 2016
 
The Port's two employee scholarship organizations have reached a milestone by surpassing the $1 million mark in scholarships for students. Over the past 20 years, Port employees have given 600 Oakland high school students $1.1 million in scholarship funds. Read more here.

Cal State University East Bay Summer Bridge (CSUEB) students 
explore the Oakland International Airport 
August 19, 2016
 
An exciting second day of career exploration for the CSUEB Summer Bridge students at the Port. Biology students explored Fan Marsh with Port Environmental Assessment Supervisor Diane Heinze and toured Martin Luther King, Jr. Regional Shoreline Park with an East Bay Regional Park District naturalist. Criminal Justice students toured Oakland International Airport and learned about airport security from the Airline Ambassadors, Alameda County Sheriff and Transportation Security Administration.

     

CSUEB Summer Bridge students 
explore the Seaport 
August 5, 2016
 
An exciting first day of career exploration for the CSUEB Summer Bridge students at the Port. Biology students explored Middle Harbor Shoreline Park (MHSP) with Director of Environmental Programs & Planning Richard Sinkoff and tide pools with MHSP Naturalists Clay Anderson and Beth Terper. Criminal Justice students toured the Seaport and learned about seaport  security  from Port Maritime Security Officer Michael O'Brien. 
   
 
STEM Day at Children's Fairyland
August 18, 2016
 
Families  had a taste of science at Children's Fairyland. The Port partnered with the East Bay Economic Development Alliance to introduce Science, Technology,  Engineering  and Math (STEM) to pre-kindergarteners. At the Port's booth, young children learned about our local watershed and how to plant their own sunflower.


Career Day at Cal Maritime Academy 
July 27, 2016  

The Port sponsored the 2016 Cal Maritime Summer Academic Enrichment Program, a six week curriculum where 22 high school students from Oakland and the surrounding Bay Area were housed on the California State University campus for the entire duration of the program. Students carried a full load of courses in STEM and learned about career pathways in the maritime industry. As part of our partnership, Port employees participated in career awareness activities throughout the summer.

   

Girls Inc. of Alameda County learn transportation and logistics
July 21, 2016
 
Girls Inc. of Alameda County youth learned about transportation and logistics: how to get a container full of A's T-shirts from Asia to a local store shelf in the Bay Area! Shipping pros explained the basics of the maritime business and goods movement through the Port of Oakland, via ships, trucks, rail and planes in an effort to create awareness of Port  careers

    
Summer Climate Justice Leadership Academy learn about 
the Port's Clean Air Program
June 30, 2016

The Port partnered with the Rose Foundation for Communities and the Enivronment to host 16 Oakland youth and young adults ranging from 15 to 19 years at the Oakland Seaport to learn about the new technologies being implemented as part of the Port's Maritime Air Quality Improvement Plan (MAQIP).  

   

Local history students have a close look at the Seaport

The Port hosted UC Berkeley history students studying the role of globalization in American capitalism. Port Environmental Programs and Planning Director Richard Sinkoff provided students with a close-up look at shipping and commerce in action at the Seaport.

Arts & crafts at the Oakland Chinatown StreetFest
August 28, 2016  

The Port's booth was a fun place for art, crafts, games and Port information at the Oakland Chinatown StreetFest. Volunteers from the Port, Asian Employees Association and the Golden Dragon Project at Lincoln Elementary School partnered together to help kids make paper lanterns and origami Pikachu! For everyone, there was Plinko, a fun game of chance.

Harbor Tours

September - October 2016

The Port of Oakland is pleased to offer free harbor tours from September through October 2016 on the beautiful Commodore Pinot Noir. Boarding will be at the foot of Broadway in Jack London Square, at the dock between Lungomare and Scott's Restaurants. The tours will last approximately 90-minutes.

Registration opens on the first Monday of each month at 7 p.m. (PDT) and remains open until filled. Registration is on a first come, first served basis.  Each registrant may only reserve up to four tickets.

Port wins 2016 communications award
August 30, 2016  

The Port of Oakland won the American Association  of Port Authorities 2016 Communications Awards Program's Award of Merit for LiveChat. The award recognizes outstanding contributions in strategic  communications that result in an increased awareness of port activity within the maritime industry and the in the local community. LiveChat is a live, online chat function which provides information to the public via the Port of Oakland website. 
 

RSVP for Contracting 101 with the Port of Oakland
Sept. 14, 2016  

Join the Port of Oakland for a morning of information exchange regarding the Port's 5-Year Capital Improvement Program (CIP), with projects totaling approximately $480 million and how to do business with the Port. East Creek Slough or Middle Harbor Shoreline Park 
Sept. 17, 2016  

Join us for our annual 2016 CA Coastal Cleanup Day at East Creek Slough on Saturday, September 17, 2016 from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm or Middle Harbor Shoreline Park from 9:00 am to 12:00 pm. 

Volunteers will help cleanup trash and debris to beautify our local waterways.
