Salvador Dali: The Persistence of Memory |
Where were you on 9/11/2001? I was teaching a virtual class early in the morning from my home in Rio Verde, Arizona. Suddenly, my students started disappearing. I had 20 participants, then 15, then 10, then none. I kept teaching until I had covered all the content, because I knew my client was sitting in and I knew what he expected. My husband had tried to get my attention, but I just waived him off. I was too busy working to be distracted by whatever it was he was trying to tell me. Read more...

Neelesh joined me all the way from South Africa and I appreciate his flexibility to talk with me during his evening. He's another example of how the entire world is interested is starting to leverage neuroscience to enhance learning and performance. Neelesh is relatively unknown in the U.S., but I predict you will be hearing more from him soon. Read more...

Featured Infographic Brain-Based Learning Principles - by Katie George
I know that every teacher reading this will understand how pleased and proud I am to feature an
infographic from one of my own students. Katie George, a Professional Development Officer for the Howard County Library System in Maryland, recently attended my ATD
Essentials of Brain-Based Learning workshop and here is what she told me:
"On my cube wall I have been collecting a series of infographics that illustrate learning theories (ADDIE, Events in Instruction, etc.) In the past, I have always googled and used others' material. Following this course, I decided to create my own."
Katie used the free infographic maker
VENNGAGE
and has produced an elegantly simple, clear, and effective example of an infographic used to reinforce learning. Katie also gives us a great example of showing your work, something we talked about with
Dr. Jane Bozarth
recently.
Thanks for sharing this, Katie!
If you want a deeper dive into the neuroscience behind designing an infographic for learning, check out my
webinar
for the
ATD Houston Chapter,
taking place online September 29.

Disrupted: My Misadventure in the Start-Up Bubble
by
Dan Lyons
Why I like it
If you've ever dreamed that someone would invite you to come join their tech start-up and make you a mega-millionaire, you might want to read this cautionary tale by Dan Lyons. I like this book because it gives a dose of sanity to the crazy myth of "overnight" successes in the tech industry and pokes holes in many of the "innovative" but not necessarily effective means used to hire, motivate and retain "creative" employees. The grass isn't necessarily greener over there - and it might be full of dandelions.

The Neuroscience of Infographics - ATD Houston Chapter
Your brain processes information in pictures, so why not deliver learning content in graphic form? Infographics are all the rage in social media because they convey a lot of information quickly and help the audience recognize patterns, connections and themes much more quickly than would be possible with text and/or audio.

Have you ever come home from an exciting conference and found yourself wondering, "What exactly did I get out of this event?"
Conferences can be exciting and energizing, but if you haven't taken the time to assimilate new information your brain doesn't get a chance to move essential pieces of your experience into longer-term memory. That's why I'm so excited to be a part of the
Training, Learning and Development Conference, (TLDC) in San Diego. This conference is doing something truly unique and exciting. Along with great speakers and hands-on workshops, we're having a
Reflection Center, dedicated to giving conference attendees a quiet place to solidify new neural pathways through intentional reflection.
