SBE voted on the following business items:
Executive Committee election - Janis Avery, Peter Maier and Judy Jennings were elected to the SBE Executive Committee.
The Board approved filing of a CR-101 on rules on the waiver from total instructional hour requirements (WAC-18-040) and on the waiver from minimum one hundred and eighty-day school year requirement (WAC 180-18-050.)
National Association of State Boards of Education Executive Director Kristen Admundson presented on federal legislation and state activities, and discussed issues with the Board.
Raj Manhas, former superintendent of North Thurston and Seattle public schools, facilitated Board discussions of strategic priorities and spoke on equity and social justice issues.
Policy area discussions- Board members discussed the following areas in depth: Every Student Succeeds Act implementation, Student Transitions, and System Transitions.
Strategic Plan discussion - The board drafted general guiding principles the will direct proposed revisions to the strategic plan.
Equity and social justice discussion- Board members and others shared their experiences addressing concerns about race, equity and social justice concerns in school districts, including equity in the distribution of funding and experienced teachers.
Legislative priorities discussion- The Board discussed numerous potential legislative priorities and will formally vote on Board 2017 legislative priorities at its November meeting.
Student presentation - Student Board Member Lindsey Salinas discussed her experiences, including efforts to integrate tribal traditions into her education, challenges in her schools, and participating in the Upward Bound program.
