Ofrenda call for proposals, now through Sept. 28
Calling all artists! The DIA, in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate of Detroit, extends an open call for proposals for the creation of ofrenda altars, offerings, honoring the life and memory of lost loved ones, to be exhibited as part of the DIA's celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Proposals are due by end of the business day Wednesday, Sept. 28, and will be reviewed by a selection committee of DIA staff and local community members of Mexican heritage. Macomb County Day, Oct. 1
The DIA is providing free bus transportation to and from the museum on Saturday, Oct. 1 for Macomb County residents. The DIA provides this service twice a year for tri-county residents. Round-trip transportation and admission is free, but reservations are required. To reserve a spot and find times and locations, call 313-833-4005 or visit tickets.dia.org.

Detroit Institute of Awesome!, every Saturday and Sunday
Saturdays and Sundays are even more kid friendly at the DIA. The museum has rolled out Detroit Institute of Awesome! , featuring a variety of art and activities tailored to kids ages 3-10. Events are free for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties. Among the highlights this month are artist demonstrations by Arturo Herrera. Learn more here .

Senior Thursdays, every Thursday at 1 p.m. 
This DIA program offers tri-county seniors the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoy programs planned exclusively for them, at no cost, every Thursday. The first Thursday of each month features a guided gallery tour; the second a lecture; the third an art-making class; and the fourth a film. During months with five Thursdays, the fifth Thursday will feature a guided gallery tour. All programs will begin at 1 p.m. The September schedule is:
  • September 8: Lecture:  The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip
  • September 15: Art-making: Travel journals 
  • September 22: Film: Mia Madre
  • September 29: Gallery tour: Highlights of the permanent collection

You can try your hand at sketching works of art from the DIA's world-class collection with guidance from museum studio instructors during Drawing in the Galleries, offered every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. No experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. Learn more here
