From Mrs. Rowley

Welcome to our preschoolers, who started back this week. It is fun to welcome new families for their child's first formal education. We are so grateful that you entrust your children to our care and we take that responsibility very seriously.

Last week we tried something a little high-tech - all morning announcements, prayer and pledge are done through video. Each afternoon I record for the next morning, and then the teachers play it on their smart boards. That way the students get to see me praying with them. It was fun on the first day, while I was standing at the back of a classroom, watching the students wave at me on the screen!

Beginning this week, we are going to keep the special intentions of a particular family in prayer. We will go alphabetically through the alphabet, unless there is a special intention, and I will send the family an email, indicating that they were the family of the day. I hope that this shows how our faith extends outside the school walls.

Next Tuesday, September 13, we have a professional photographer visiting our school to take lots of photos for us to use for marketing purposes.  If possible, please have your child wear full winter uniform for this day only.  Also, we can only use your child's photo if you sign the agreement in the Wednesday folder.  Thank you for your cooperation.  This is a wonderful opportunity for our school.

Next Wednesday is Back to School night and we look forward to seeing you all. A schedule will go out by the end of this week. At that time, we will be asking for volunteers for room parents. Please consider this important role and let your classroom teacher know if you are willing to serve in that role. Thank you in advance.

From the Editor

I am so happy to be serving as the Buzz editor again this school year! I accept submissions from teachers, staff, and parents. If you know of something interesting going on in our community, or want to give a shout out to someone at the school, please send it in to me. I especially love pictures. Please contact Mrs. Rowley to make sure that we have permission to publish pictures of every student in the picture and make sure the pictures are less than 5MB. Submissions are due  by Mondays at 5pm. Thank you!

Parents' Top Clinic Questions for Back to School
The back-to-school season can arouse dread in parents and children alike, especially when it comes to sickness and health. Aside from marking the end of summer's lazy days, "back to school" signals the start of a crazy time for many families, a time during which we scramble to update immunizations, re-establish more structured eating, television, and bedtime routines, and keep our children healthy.
To help you plan a healthy and anxiety-free school year below are some answers to questions on the minds of parents readying themselves for a new school year - and a new cold and flu season.
  1. How do I decrease my child's anxiety about starting school?
For a happier, healthier transition, do not wait until the night before school starts to set up sleep and nutrition routines that might not have been strictly enforced over the summer. Try setting bed and wake-up times a few weeks before school starts and gradually adjusting them to be earlier as the first day approaches.

Pop Tabs Collection for Ronald McDonald House

For the past two years, our school students have been collecting pop tabs to benefit the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Greater Washington DC.  In June, Mrs. Kiernan donated our entire collection of more than 19 lbs of pop tabs to the RMHC office located on the campus of the INOVA Hospital on Gallows Road.

Let's see if we can top our recent donation in the year to come!  It is a great way to teach our children about philanthropy and the importance of recycling while raising funds to help sick children and their families.  Help us to help them...

Collection containers will be placed in each classroom and the 6th graders will periodically pick up all pop tabs from each homeroom.  The RMHC sells the metal tabs and all funds support their cause. You can find the pop tabs on soda cans, some soup or vegetable cans, cat food cans, etc.

Thank you for your help in supporting this worthy cause.

THIRD ANNUAL COAT DRIVE

Now is the time to start thinking about items to donate for our annual coat drive which will run Nov. 1 - 30. We will accept clean used or new winter wear.  The last few days of November will be Catholic Schools Care About Catholic Charities Week, so what a great way to finish out the Year of Mercy by helping our neighbors
