Thalassa installation by Swoon, Sept. 24 to March 19, 2017
The DIA, in partnership with Detroit-based gallery Library Street Collective, will exhibit
Thalassa, a spectacular 20-foot-tall installation in the museum's Great Hall by famed New York street artist Caledonia "Callie" Curry, known as Swoon. The DIA installation, which will be on view from Sept. 24 to March 19, 2017, will be accompanied by a community mural project in Detroit's Jefferson-Chalmers neighborhood. "Thalassa" is free with museum admission and for residents of Wayne, Oakland and Macomb counties.

Ofrenda call for proposals, now through Sept. 28
Calling all artists! The DIA, in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate of Detroit, extends an open call for proposals for the creation of ofrenda altars, offerings, honoring the life and memory of lost loved ones, to be exhibited as part of the DIA's celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Proposals are due by end of the business day Wednesday, Sept. 28, and will be reviewed by a selection committee of DIA staff and local community members of Mexican heritage. Director's Cut talk, Alger Theater, Sept. 29, 6:30 p.m. 
Get to know DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons as he talks about his background, a brief history of the museum and his vision for the future at the historic Alger Theater, located at 16451 E Warren Ave. in Detroit's MorningSide neighborhood. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions following the talk, and there will be a reception. The event is free and open to the public.
 
Senior Thursdays, every Thursday at 1 p.m. 
This DIA program offers tri-county seniors the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoy programs planned exclusively for them, at no cost, every Thursday. The first Thursday of each month features a guided gallery tour; the second a lecture; the third an art-making class; and the fourth a film. During months with five Thursdays, the fifth Thursday will feature a guided gallery tour. All programs will begin at 1 p.m. The September schedule is:
  • September 8: Lecture:  The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip
  • September 15: Art-making: Travel journals 
  • September 22: Film: Mia Madre
  • September 29: Gallery tour: Highlights of the permanent collection

You can try your hand at sketching works of art from the DIA's world-class collection with guidance from museum studio instructors during Drawing in the Galleries, offered every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. No experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided.
