New CFPA Report:  Food Insecurity Screenings in Health Care Settings

Today, CFPA released a new report, Screening and Interventions for Food Insecurity in Health Care Settings, that describes the intersection between food insecurity and health and lays out state strategies to increase food insecurity screening and intervention practices in health care settings.

Health care settings across the country have begun to use validated screening tools to help identify food-insecure individuals and refer them to nutrition assistance. In this way, health care teams can serve as a critical connection between food-insecure patients and existing nutrition resources. However, very few medical practices in California have implemented screening as a system- or program-wide practice.

CFPA encourages state and local health care administrators and health care affiliates to work with California's network of anti-hunger, public health, and health care advocates to identify promising opportunities to increase the number of health care settings that are effectively monitoring and addressing food insecurity.

New Breakfast After the Bell Resources

New funding for school breakfast is on the way! In January 2017, the California Department of Education will announce the availability of state-funded grants to support the start-up or expansion of after-the-bell breakfast in high-poverty schools. By increasing access to school breakfast, these grants will support student health and academic achievement.

What's Next?
While the grants won't be announced until January, there are important steps you can take right now.
  • Read and share this factsheet about the after-the-bell breakfast grants. PDF
  • Learn more about after-the-bell breakfast here and on BreakfastFirst.org.
  • Visit our County Profile and School Meal Analysis pages to find school breakfast data for your community.
  • Connect with school districts in your community to promote the grants and encourage the use of breakfast after the bell.
  • Stay tuned for more details about the breakfast grant and the application process, including best practices for writing successful grant proposals.
In addition to state funds, private grants can help support effective school breakfast programs. Our friends at California Action for Healthy Kids have school breakfast grants open until September 16. Please contact Katia Ahmed  for details.
