Employer Perspective
Tips for Making the Most of a Career Fair
There is a misconception about career fairs. Some believe that they are not valuable when searching for employment because employers tell candidates to apply online. However, career fairs are excellent avenues to network and learn about the company.  Yes, you may be directed to the company website to complete the online application but many recruiters will still take your resume at the career fair or make note of your name. If you make a good impression, they will check to make sure you applied online as directed and they will move your application to the top for an interview. Before attending any upcoming career/job fairs, check out the tips below from career professionals on how to make the most of an upcoming fair.
  • Know who you are and have a focused direction prior to attending the job fair. Be able to speak about what you want.
  • Be prepared to ask questions about their company and the positions available. Do research ahead of time about the employers who will be in attendance.
  • Express excitement (and smile) about the opportunity to interact with the employer- even if they don't have an opportunity you are interested in at this time. You never know when they may open up new positions.
  • Have several copies of your updated, error-free resume available for distribution.
  • Do not leave the fair without at least speaking with 7- 10 employers.
  • Follow-up after the fair is important. Ask for business cards; then write thank you letters.
  • Dress professionally- first impressions do matter.
All alumni are invited and welcome to attend the upcoming SHIP sponsored career fair at Shippensburg University on October 4.  No pre-registration required. Contact Alumni Relations if you have any questions at [email protected] or 717-477-1218.

Giving Back with the Alumni Admissions Program
We are seeking alumni who are interested in assisting with our Alumni Admissions program. Over the past year we had 300+ alumni assist with phone calls, letter writing, congratulatory note cards and additional ways in recruiting new students to Ship. Listed below are ways you can get involved and help your alma mater. Reach out to Lorie at [email protected] or sign up online at  http://www.ship.edu/admissions/AAR/ to assist.
  1. College Fairs: Attend with a Shippensburg University admissions representative and talk with parents, students, & guidance counselors about SHIP! You don't need to know the nitty gritty of SHIP, just share your experiences! (Occurs during the October/November time frame each year). A schedule will be sent to you to review and volunteer.
  2. Admitted Student Letters: Write letters to 10 applicants who have been accepted to SHIP but have not yet confirmed. Your letter may be the push they need to feel connected to Ship and will send their confirmation in! (Occurs in October and again in February/March). We will mail you letterhead, postage and a sample letter. You can type these on the computer and just change them slightly for each student.
  3. Confirmed Student Note Cards: Write a note card to 10 students who confirmed their acceptance to SHIP!  Simply welcome them to the family!  (Occurs in March/April). We will mail you necessary information and postage paid envelopes and post card.
  4. Phone Calls: Call students who have started their application to Shippensburg University but have not completed their applications yet. The goal is to excite the student about SHIP and encourage them to complete their application by turning in missing items and come for a visit. You can select to call 10 or 100 students. Calls are no more than 5 mins and you can leave a message if they are not available. (Occurs during October and January).
