Louisiana Disaster Relief
|
|
Early analyses reported by various state and local agencies near Baton Rouge, LA, as well as non-profits involved in the recovery efforts report that 6.9 trillion gallons of rain fell over an 8-day period*, which is 3 times as much rain as Louisiana experienced during Hurricane Katrina. Because of the flooding in that area, more than 20 LA parishes have been declared disaster areas and more than 128,000 households have applied for FEMA assistance*.
Due to the numerous requests from around the country as to how the profession can help, AIA Louisiana, with help from AIA National, has set up a fund to help affected AIA members, firms and staff with financial assistance for immediate response efforts and to fulfill unmet needs. Ballot for AIA KY 2017 Officers
|
|
The ballot containing AIA Kentucky's slate of officers for 2017, as well as information on proposed revisions to AIA Kentucky's bylaws was distributed to all current members in mid-August. Responses must be submitted no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, September 15, 2016, so be sure to cast your vote ASAP.
AIA Kentucky members will ratify the election results and vote on proposed bylaws amendments at the 2016 AIA Kentucky Annual Meeting, which is scheduled for Friday, September 16, 2016 from 7:15 to 8:15 a.m. during the AIA Kentucky/Indiana Convention at the Lexington Convention Center. Kentucky's Small Business Tax Credit (KSBTC) program has been designed to encourage small business growth and create jobs- a win/win for employers and job seekers. Most for-profit businesses with 50 or fewer full-time employees are eligible for credits that range between $3,500-$25,000, and now the program has been expanded and simplified! Also helping to create more Kentucky jobs is the immediate suspension of the Unemployment Insurance (UI) Surcharge, which is projected to save Kentucky Business up to $34M annually. Read More

Kevin Locke, AIA who is AIA Kentucky's representative on the HBC Board, reports that the 2016 KBC / KRC are being reviewed by their respective task forces with the goal being to have all the recommendations to the HBC Board at their next meeting in November for review and a vote.
Locke also noted that current review times are at 24 days.

National Recognition
De Leon & Primmer Architecture Workshop has been selected to receive an American Architecture Award for their Knoxville Botanical Garden & Arboretum Visitor Pavilion! - Randal Reifsnider, AIA officially retired on Friday, August 19 and no longer works for Conspectus.

AIA Kentucky's state chapter and three local components conducted extensive discussions throughout 2015 that were focused on realignment with one another to allow for the most effective delivery of AIA's core services to our members all across the state. Out of those efforts came the decision to transition AIA Northern Kentucky from its status as an independent chapter to a voluntary section of AIA Kentucky. This request, which will allow for the state to provide increased support to AIA Northern Kentucky, was approved by AIA National in August.

NCARB AXP Session
The UK CoD School of Architecture is hosting an NCARB presentation on the new AXP (Architectural Experience Program) on Wednesday, Sept 14. This session will be held in room 209 of Pence Hall from 4-6 PM and is open to both students and Emerging Professionals currently in the workplace to come and have their questions answered.
Exhibition and Lecture
The College is also hosting its first guest exhibition of the fall with work by Gene Egger, professor emeritus at Virginia Tech School of Architecture + Design. His exhibit, "The Places of Place: Sketching the Encounter," which includes experiential sketches from Virginia, Europe, Central America and more, is on display at the Lexington Downtown Arts Center (DAC) now through Oct. 3. The community is invited to view Egger's work and to attend a lecture by Egger at the DAC on September 14, from 6-7:30 p.m.

Though a jury of architects and filmmakers is reviewing submissions for select prizes, the public is encouraged to select their favorite 2016 film as part of this year's People's Choice Award. The People's Choice Award is an opportunity to showcase the film that most resonates with the public. Voting for the People's Choice Award is open here, now through October 3rd.
Graduated Dues
In order to relieve the financial strain incurred during the pursuit of licensure, AIA National has passed a resolution that allows for Associate member dues to be incrementally stepped up to the full Architect member dues for a period of three years after obtaining their professional license. Because we are committed to supporting our emerging professionals, this gradual increase has also been approved by AIA Kentucky's state and local chapters!
