Wallace State helping families of students, faculty and staff of sister college in Baton Rouge
A student-initiated supply drive to assist families affected by flooding in Louisiana has grown into a partnership with Baton Rouge Community College to assist the families of students, faculty and staff who have been affected by the disaster.

Aviation/Flight Technology Student Alexander Perez of Slidell, La., helped initiate the drive for supplies. Perez, an Army Veteran and member of a National Guard unit based out of New Orleans, was called up for duty as the flood waters approached Baton Rouge. His unit helped evacuate thousands of residents from their flooded neighborhoods. As a survivor of Hurricane Katrina, Perez said he knew what the evacuees were going through and tried to encourage them, letting them know the situation they were in at the moment is temporary, that they will survive the disaster and recover.

When he contacted his Success Coach, Susan Peek, to let her know he would be out of classes while on duty, she asked if there was anything the college could do to assist in the recovery efforts. Perez told her people needed help with cleaning supplies, personal hygiene items, and other supplies to help them start the recovery process. A drive for those supplies was initiated and soon the college had more supplies than Perez could fit into his truck. He picked up the most essential items last week and made his way to Baton Rouge over the weekend to deliver them for distribution.

Meanwhile, the college extended the drive through Sept. 7, and will collect more cleaning supplies, hygiene items, school supplies (elementary-college), baby items, household items, etc. The items collected will be transported to Baton Rouge Community College and distributed to the families of students, faculty and staff who have been affected by the flood. The college estimates that 35 percent of the students, faculty and staff have lost everything in the disaster.

Thanks for being a part of the legacy!

You are following in the footsteps of tens of thousands of former Wallace State students, including the first 59 who walked through the doors 50 years ago. Before then, students in the area had few opportunities to advance their education. Finances, distance and other factors all played a role in whether they could go to college. With the opening of what was then called the George C. Wallace State Trade School of Cullman County, area students were provided the opportunity to learn a trade that would let them build a career and help their families.

Since then, the college has grown by leaps and bounds, adding academic and health programs and even more technical programs to meet the needs of the community and area residents. Today, Wallace State is ranked among the best in the state and nation, and prides itself on continuing the tradition set five decades ago to offer its students the best education at an affordable price that puts your dreams and aspirations one step closer to fulfillment.

So as we begin this Fall 2016 semester, Wallace State would like to honor all of those who came before and welcome you as you add to the legacy that is Wallace State Community College.

And, if you take photos to document your time here at Wallace State, please feel free to tag us through our social media pages on Facebook, Twitter or Instagram.
