The CSI Foundation has a process for students who find themselves in an unexpected financial bind called the Emergency Grant Application (or EGA). It requires an on campus referral. The application file can be accessed through our website at www.csi.edu/foundation. Click here for an attachment to this message. If you have a student that you feel may be at risk for dropping out or a student who cannot get the book for your class because of financial reasons you can fill out the referral part of the application and send them our way. We try to help as many qualified students as we can. This type of scholarship is not dependent on GPA or Program.  Feel free to save this file to your computer so you have access to it anytime during the semester. As always you can contact Tamara Harmon if you have questions about this. We all hope that you have a fabulous semester.

PantrySeeking Donations for Gilbert's Pantry
Welcome Back CSI Campus Faculty and Staff!

As you heard Dr. Schwarz mention during his address last week, Student Services is taking on a new initiative this year, helping our hungry students. Gilbert's Pantry is opening this fall to assist CSI students who are food insecure. In order to be able to provide this service to our students we are asking our CSI employee community for non-perishable donations. Please bring your non-perishable donations to the Office of Student Affairs on the second floor of the Taylor building.

Additionally as you get to know your students this fall, if you hear of students who are in need of food, please send them to Gilbert's Pantry, located within the Office of Student Affairs. Assistance is provided to all students with a current CSI ID and the process of receiving food is confidential.

RefugeeRefugee Portrait Project at CSI

Look into the eyes of the faces in a display of photos at the College of Southern Idaho's Meyerhoeffer building and you'll see struggle, perseverance, hardship, and understanding. You may also see a depth of experience that most Americans will never know.

The Refugee Portrait Project consists of 25 black and white portraits of local men and women who have made Twin Falls their home after fleeing the turmoil in their home countries. The photos were taken by Ken Bingham, a 23-year professor of English at CSI, who reflects upon the words of art historian Erwin Panofsky; 'On the one hand, portraiture seeks to bring out whatever it is in which the sitter differs from the rest of humanity. On the other hand, it seeks to bring out whatever the sitter has in common with the rest of humanity and what remains in him regardless of place and time.'

"Their presence in our community reflects more than the calamitous circumstances that brought them here: it allies them with those who were already here as they integrate into and enrich local life," said Bingham in his artist's statement. "It also demonstrates that fear of appearances, of mere external differences, cannot withstand the combined sense of shared humanity and compassion that some people willingly extend to those in need."

The display is available to the public and will be up until late September.

What if some of the Herrett Center's iconic displays could come to life? Would you be prepared to face a woolly mammoth up close? How about a saber tooth cat or a dire wolf? Well prepare yourself to see these creatures, and others, come to life on the Faulkner Planetarium's dome beginning September 6th with the premiere of Titans of the Ice Age.

Twenty thousand years ago the Earth was in the grips of the last ice age. At that time glaciers covered most of North America, Europe and parts of Asia. Some of our ancestors lived among great and sometimes dangerous creatures, hunting them to survive. Woolly mammoths roamed the land along with saber tooth cats and dire wolves; now extinct. There were also animals alive then that are familiar to us today. Titans of the Ice Age will transport you to the beautiful and frozen landscapes in a time period five thousand years before civilization. Learn the causes of ice ages and experience this harsh environment, the kingdom of the titans as they come to life again before your very eyes.

Planetarium manager Rick Greenawald says of Titans of the Ice Age, "The incredible computer graphic rendering of these extinct species is really something to behold. These are creatures that roamed the very place where we now live. Mammoth bones have been uncovered right here in southern Idaho, so this film offers the residents of our area a chance to look into the past history of the region. The film also goes very well with the museum displays in our Browning-Keveren Gallery, just outside the planetarium, where visitors can see the center's cast of the Huntington Canyon mammoth, a replica of a saber tooth cat and search for the skull of a dire wolf. Additionally, there is the Simon Clovis Cache on display; visitors can see points made by indigenous people, some of which may be similar to those that they used to hunt mammoth. Titans of the Ice Age is an excellent experience for folks of all ages."

The Faulkner Planetarium is Idaho's largest planetarium. Movies and shows come to life on its 50-foot dome thanks to the Evans and Sutherland Digistar 5 fulldome video system. Thousands of people each year enjoy the programs offered by the Faulkner.
Titans of the Ice Age will run at 7:00 PM Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays and at 3:30 PM

Saturdays starting September 6th. Admission prices to planetarium shows are $6.00 adults, $5.00 seniors, $4.00 student, including CSI students with a valid student ID; children under age 2 are admitted free.

The Faulkner Planetarium is located in the Herrett Center for Arts and Science on the College of Southern Idaho campus in Twin Falls, ID. For more information, visit the Herrett Center's web page at http://herrett.csi.edu or call (208) 732-6655.

The Herrett Center for Arts and Science has a few more spaces left in their new after school program for teens starting Sept. 13. The free program, open to students in grades 9 through 12, is funded by the Idaho Humanities Council and is the first of its kind in Idaho.

Herrett Center Education Facilitator Laura Browarny says Herrett Teens participants will go on multiple field trips, hear presentations from guest speakers, and make lots of new friends. Field trips will include the Minidoka National Historic Site, Massacre Rocks State Park, a private tour of the Idaho State University Museum of Natural History archaeology collection, the Jerome County Historical Society, Stricker Ranch Site, and a private tour of the Fort Hall Indian Reservation Museum.

"The teens will have a unique opportunity to go behind the scenes at the Herrett Center with a diverse group of new peers. We're creating a safe place for open dialogue about the past, present, and future of southern Idaho," said Browarny. "Members will share opinions, create personal connections, and eat lots of snacks."

The After School Teen Community for the Humanities will meet after school on Tuesday and Thursday afternoons for twelve weeks starting Sept. 13 at the Herrett Center on the College of Southern Idaho campus. A few Saturday field trips will take the place of weekday meetings. Space in the program will be limited to 25 students. Transportation to and from the Herrett Center may be arranged. Applications are being taken now through Sept. 6. Members will be notified of their acceptance to the program by Sept. 9.

The program website and online applications can be found at http://herrett.csi.edu/teens/.  For more information, please contact Browarny at 208-732-6664 or at lbrowarny@csi.edu.

Del Parkinson in Concert Del
The College of Southern Idaho Music Department will present pianist Del Parkinson in recital at 7:30 p.m. on September 16, in the CSI Fine Arts Auditorium.  Tickets are $10/adults, $8/seniors, and $6/students and are available at the CSI Fine Arts Box Office.

Del Parkinson will perform a program entitled "Once Upon a Time." The program demonstrates the narrative power of music in selections by Beethoven, Chopin, Debussy, Bernstein, and Gershwin. The program will blend narration with live performance. The performer will describe the story behind each piece before playing it on the piano. "Music can express that which words cannot.  Music will paint pictures, spin a yarn, and convey emotions," Parkinson said. "Each masterwork on this program tells a tale!"

Del Parkinson began studying piano at age five in his hometown of Blackfoot, Idaho. He now holds a doctor of music degree from Indiana University and a postgraduate diploma from The Juilliard School. He was the recipient of a Fulbright-Hays grant for graduate study in London. He was coordinator of piano instruction at Brigham Young University-Idaho, where he taught for eight years, and is now professor of piano at Boise State University, where he joined the faculty in 1985.

His London debut recital was on the American Bicentennial Series, and his New York debut recital in Carnegie Recital Hall was sponsored by the Idaho Commission on the Arts. He has performed with the Guadalajara Symphony, the Indiana University Symphony, the Civic Orchestra of Chicago, the Utah Symphony, and the Boise Philharmonic. He is featured on four compact disc recordings: The American Piano Quartet and The American Piano Duo's Mendelssohn Two-Piano Concerto, Rachmaninoff Duo Piano Works, and Celebrating Gershwin. He is the recipient of the Boise State University foundation scholar award for creative activity, the Boise mayor's award for artistic excellence, the Morrison Center honor medallion, the Idaho Commission on the Arts career fellowship award, and the Idaho governor's award for excellence in the arts. He has recorded seven CDs and is recognized on the international roster of Steinway artists.

The CSI Stage Door Series was created to provide a series of collaborative, urban-like arts experiences where both performers and audience members are on the stage itself. These performances are designed to be thought-provoking and a little out of the ordinary in different ways - whether it's because of the intimate setting, the material performed, the way they are presented, or the collaborations involved. Proceeds for the performances will benefit CSI fine arts academic programs. This is a chance to see the CSI faculty outside of the classroom as well as guest artists, talented members of the community, the best of the best students, or hidden gems!

Guitar + One - September 22 at 7:30 p.m.
Don't miss the kick-off to the Stage Door Series with a night of exciting duets with guitarist Michael J. Frew in collaboration with a variety of instrumentalists, vocalists, and machines. Come experience the versatility of the world's most popular and beloved instrument, the guitar, with pieces that range from the Renaissance to this very moment.  The evening will include a live performance of Steve Reich's Electric Counterpoint, accompanied by new original recordings and a special early incarnation of CSI Guitar Ensemble.

The CSI Employee Wellbeing Committee has declared Labor Day, September 5, to be CSI Work-Life Balance Day.  Work-life balance is a defined as including proper prioritizing between "work" (career and ambition) and "lifestyle" (health, pleasure, leisure, family and spiritual development/meditation).

What can you do?

Vacation and sick leave are benefits provided by CSI to allow for time away from work and to recover from illnesses when needed. The HR office and Wellbeing Committee strongly encourage you to stay home from work when you are ill and to take your available vacation time to relax and refresh yourself and spend quality time with family and friends.

Paid vacation for 12-month employees is accrued at a rate of ten (10) days per year for non-exempt employees and fifteen (15) for exempt employees. After 5 years of employment administration and staff earn 1 more day per year to a maximum of ten (10) days. Your leave accrual and usage is noted on your MyCSI site online and may be found by logging in, clicking on Employee Info and then on "Review your time off accrual."  Vacation time that may be carried over from one year to the next is restricted to 240 hours while sick leave is unlimited.

You may calculate how much vacation you need to use or lose NOW, before you get to the end of the semester and find that you are over 240 hours that will not carry over. Talk to your supervisor and schedule time off on your calendar today!

Non-exempt employees:
Earn 6.67 hours/month + 1 day (8 hours) per year starting year 6 of employment to a max of 13.33 hours per month (plus overtime compensation)

Exempt employees:
Earn 10 hours/month + 1 day (8 hours) per year starting year 6 of employment to a max of 16.67 hours per month.

What a supervisor can do?

This is a great time for you to encourage your staff to check their vacation accrual and schedule leave during fall semester. But first, set a good example by taking your own vacation time and always staying home when you are sick. You set the tone for your department. If you don't stay home when you're sick, your staff don't feel they can either. If you don't use your vacation leave, your staff take notice and delay taking vacation themselves. Additionally, you should train and empower your staff to make day-to-day decisions to free you from email and telephone calls from work while you're away. The CSI Wellbeing Program encourages all our employees to participate in good self-care!
Questions?

The staff in the HR Department are always happy to answer your questions. As your Wellbeing Coordinator, I can also answer questions about vacation leave and help you assess your leave use and accrual. Simply call Judy at x6269 or drop by at your convenience.
