Help with Flood Buckets
After speaking with the UMCOR disaster team in Decatur, they are desperately needing flood buckets now to help our friends in Louisiana. We have decided to put together 200 buckets as soon as we can get the supplies purchased. This will cost about $5,000 so we would love to have your help. Make checks to VHUMC with the notation Flood Buckets, or cash should be put into the envelopes with Flood Bucket on the envelope. Thank you!
A Special Time in Worship
This Sunday, Bishop Bill McAlilly will be preaching in the 8:30 and 11:00 am worship services in our Sanctuary. We remember this month the birthday of our own Bishop Bob Morgan, and Bishop McAlilly will be with us to commemorate that special day.

Bishop Bill McAlilly and his wife, Lynn, reside in the Nashville Area. He serves as the Bishop of the Memphis and Tennessee Conferences. He currently serves on the Board of Trustees of Emory University, Atlanta, GA; Methodist Le Bonheur Healthcare Board, Memphis, TN; and the Board of Trustees of Martin College, Pulaski, TN.

Bishop McAlilly is a native of Mississippi. He earned a Bachelor of Arts in Religion, Millsaps College, Jackson, MS (1978) and a Masters of Divinity, Candler School of Theology, Emory University, Atlanta, GA (1981). He was ordained deacon in the United Methodist Church in 1979 and ordained elder in 1982. He has served in a wide variety of ministry settings in Georgia and Mississippi: a small membership church, a new congregation, a county seat church, a newly organized congregation, and a large membership congregation. Likewise, he has served in a variety of roles: youth minister, associate minister, and lead pastor.

When Bishop Morgan and Martha served the Mississippi Annual Conference from 1984-1992, Bishop McAlilly was a fairly new ordained elder. Bishop Morgan was a mentor to Bishop McAlilly, supported him throughout his ministry, and was elated to see his election as a Bishop of the church.

We are excited to have Bishop McAlilly with us this week.

What's Happening in the Day School
Our school year is off to a great start! We began our new school year on August 15. In addition to welcoming back our returning families, we welcomed 27 new families to the Preschool Program and 12 new families to the After School Program. We are very close to having 100% enrollment in all classes. We have a few openings in our transitional 5K class, but all other classes are full.

We welcomed some new teachers to our team as well, but are still in need of some afternoon staff. If you or anyone you know might be interested, please contact us at 769-0128.

The fall Whale of a Sale is coming up September 15 & 16. Don't miss out on this great children's consignment sale! There are still volunteer opportunities available. Visit www.thewhaleofasale.com for more information. Thank you for your continued support of our ministry.
September Memory Verse
Each school year our 1st-5th graders have the opportunity to memorize a new Bible verse each month. Our September memory verse is: "With the Lord on my side I do not fear. What can mortals do to me?" -Psalm 118:6. 1st-5th graders can recite the verse in the elementary office before or after Sunday School for a sweet treat and a chance to win a grand prize at the end of the school year!

Record Year for Car Ministry
The VHUMC Car Ministry has had a record year! Because of your support, we have helped 24 people/families with either a gift of a dependable car or the repair of an existing car. This ministry dramatically changes the lives of people who have been spending hours walking, riding buses, begging rides, missing appointments, losing jobs because they can't get to work, or missing school when no ride is available. Many of our recipients have reported that a reliable car has led to a full-time job, badly needed health benefits, and new participation in school and church events. Each person/family leaves our church feeling thankful, hopeful, blessed, and loved with the wonderful pride that comes with having transportation.

This is only possible through your generous donations. We would like you to consider donating a car that you are no longer using. Or, perhaps you are looking for a great ministry that will use 100% of your monetary donation to truly help change a life. How about your "end of year" giving, would you consider giving now? We currently have 25 people waiting for our help with a car. If you would like any information about joining us or helping in any way, please call any team member or the missions office ( [email protected] / 769-0143).

Food Pantry
Food Pantry appreciates everyone who helped pay for items from the Farmer's Market during the summer. We now need to ask you for apples, oranges, carrots, and other fresh fruits and vegetables that our families enjoy so much. It is best to bring them to church Monday thru Wednesday morning. Thank you!

Oak Mountain Mission
We have 47 people in our group going to the annual fundraising luncheon at The Club next Tuesday.  Please remember to come at 10:00 for our silent auction. Thank you to those who have donated items for the auction!
