Inlet Dance Theatre July, 2016

Summer is winding down and so is Inlet's 15th season. But don't worry, you can still find Inlet all over the city!

In this issue of In the Current, you will see what's been happening in the last few weeks of Inlet Summer Dance Intensive 2016 with an invitation to attend the culminating performance with Inlet staff and students at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater July 27th and 28th. You'll see that during the intensive, other Inlet members have been performing for downtown at Public Square during the Republican National Convention.

In August, Inlet has three concerts, all of which are FREE and open to the public. For the second time, Inlet will be at MetroHealth Hospitals, for the fourth year at Arts in August in Tremont, and for the second time at The Grove Amphitheater in Mayfield Village.

Coming next season, Inlet will kick off the year with a performance at Cleveland Public Theatre for their annual benefit, Pandemonium!

Also in this issue, Artistic/Executive Director Bill Wade will recap what it's been like growing Inlet Dance Theatre into the company and organization it is today!
Inlet's Summer Dance Intensive 2.5 Week Performance

On Fri, July 1st, Inlet's Summer Dance Intensive (SDI), housed at Playhouse Square again this summer, provided a Sneak Peak into what the SDI students and the Inlet Trainee & Apprentice dancers are collaboratively creating with Inlet's Company Members. Audience members learned a bit about the process and got to see new works in progress as the full ensemble prepares for the annual free performances at Cain Park Evans Amphitheater July 27 & 28th.

The Cain Park performances will consist of three works created for the students, an improvisation performance including all students, Trainees, Proteges, Apprentices, and Company Members, an ensemble piece  created on the Inlet Trainee & Apprentice Program dancers, a work specifically for the Apprentices, and the Company Members will perform two works from their repertory. You don't want to miss this show! On August 11 at 8:30 p.m. Inlet will take the stage for the fourth year as part of the Arts in August in Tremont's Lincoln Park. The mission of Arts in August is to expose the people of Tremont, Greater Cleveland, and Cuyahoga County to the beauty and positive influence of the arts,   free of cost!  Arts in August is a unique performance series. The four presenters include three nonprofits and a City Councilman; a true collaboration of unique partners. The four partnering presenters aim to specialize in building community in both the social and physical realms.  Tremont West, LAND Studio, Cleveland Public Theatre and Councilman Kerry McCormack hold values in community and know the value in bringing the community together. What better way is there to bring a community together but around the arts! Lincoln Park, located at W. 14th and Starkweather in the heart of Tremont, is the perfect venue for this signature outdoor performance series. Having steadily grown since 2002, Arts in August attracts thousands of residents and visitors each year.

Reflecting on Inlet's 15th Season

Inlet is coming to the close of our fifteenth season. I've been doing a lot of reflecting on these last 15 years as I'm watching the next phase of the company's development open up before us all. I keep thinking about the incredible number of individuals over the years that we've had the privilege to pour into and how we've watched as people's lives have dramatically transformed. We've intentionally served our community being mindful to include a multigenerational reach that is also inclusive of lower, middle, and upper classes-often intentionally putting this spectrum of age and class into studios and theaters together. Feedback we've gathered communicates clearly to us that the mentoring and engagement programming we conduct is meaningful. Mastery based education initiatives in which students experience creating, evaluating, performing and connecting dance to their everyday lives results in paradigm shifts. "Using dance to further people" engages people's imaginations, creativity, hope and empathy. It is amazing to observe how this idea is positively impacting lives in our and other communities.  It is exciting to see the scope of our performing and educating programming grow exponentially and to realize that we are exporting Cleveland made work in increasing ways.  It is not easy, but it is worth it.  I am humbled by it all and ever so thankful.

About Us
Inlet Dance Theatre is one of the region's most exciting professional modern dance companies.  Founded in 2001 by Artistic Director Bill Wade, Inlet embodies his longstanding belief that dance viewing, training and performing experiences serve as tools to bring about personal growth and development.  Inlet's collaborative artistic staff builds the company's solid reputation for uplifting individuals and engaging new audiences via performances and education programming.

Inlet Dance Theatre's concerts, special events, Inflow and Outflow education programs began as local initiatives and now reach regional and international markets.  Inlet's diverse base of work includes concerts such as part of Cleveland Public Theatre's DanceWorks series, PlayhouseSquare's LAUNCH initiative, and includes international exchanges to Easter Island (a commonwealth of Chile) and participation in the Cleveland Foundation's Creative Fusion International Artist Exchange Program.  Inlet's education programming includes teaching dance in our rehearsal studio, our classes at the Music Settlement, attracting students from as far away as Central America and Israel to our Summer Dance Intensive, and conducting residencies throughout Ohio as part of the Ohio Arts Council's Artist in Residence Program

In contrast to an industry where people are often used to further dance, Inlet Dance Theatre is committed to using dance to further people.  Discover for yourself what makes Inlet unique.
