Chamber & Chevron Host ECISD New Teacher Welcome Breakfast

On Wednesday, August 3rd, the Odessa Chamber of Commerce (OCC) & Chevron hosted the third annual ECISD New Teacher Welcome Breakfast.

Held at the Ector County Coliseum, more than 300 people attended, with 215 of those being new teachers. Teachers were welcomed by Odessa Chamber of Commerce President/CEO Renee Earls, City of Odessa Mayor David Turner, Thomas Crowe, ECISD Superintendent, and OCC Chairman Craig Van Amburgh. This year, the event was proudly sold out, accumulating a record number of vendors and attendees.

"We appreciate all that the teachers do for us, and to have over 200 new teachers in our community is a wonderful asset," said Earls. "We want to make sure they feel very welcome in Odessa."

After the welcome, the employees had time to stop by more than 40 vendor tables set up by Chamber members and learn about a variety of businesses, services and organizations available to them within Ector County. Each table provided information as well as "swag" for the teachers to take away.

The Odessa Chamber of Commerce would like to thank our 2015-2016 Platinum Sponsors, along with the following Breakfast sponsors: Betenbough Homes; Complex Community Federal Credit Union; Frost Bank; First Basin Credit Union; Odessa Council for Arts & Humanities; Medical Center Health System; My Community Federal Credit Union; Weidner Apartment Homes; West Texas Educators Credit Union, and Vickers Insurance. We would also like to thank our event co-sponsors: Anytime Fitness; Ector County TSTA; H-E-B; Odessa A.T.P.E.; Odessa Regional Medical Center, and The University of Texas of the Permian Basin.
Chris Kyle Memorial Open to the Public
The unveiling ceremony for the Chris Kyle Memorial Plaza was held on Thursday, July 28. The plaza is located at 8050 E Hwy 191 behind Medical Center Health System's Center for Health and Wellness.

The 2,800 square-foot plaza broke ground in early April and is now open to the public. Led by a committee of prominent Odessans, under the auspices of the Odessa Community Foundation, the Chris Kyle Memorial Plaza project was an effort driven by fundraising.

"The goal is for the setting to be a healing and peaceful place for veterans and their families receiving care at the medical center, and those citizens who want to stop by and take a moment in honor of Chris and all those who serve," said Taya Kyle, wife of war veteran Chris Kyle.

The event attracted more than 500 individuals. Among some of the attendees at the memorial were Congressman K. Michael Conaway, Senator Kel Seliger, State Representative Brooks Landgraf, renowned artist and sculptor Vic Payne, nationally recognized country singer Larry Gatlin, the Kyle Family, and highly reputed veteran, Dr. Sudip Bose.

"I am proud of the entire West Texas community for stepping up and honoring a distinguished veteran that was born here in Odessa," said Kirk Edwards, Chairman of the Chris Kyle Memorial Committee. "I am also proud of the Chris Kyle memorial committee for their time, energy and talents to bring this statue and memorial plaza to reality. Long after we leave this earth, future West Texans and visitors to the area will be gratified to see that a community came together to honor one of its own that served this country so selflessly. I am personally humbled to be a small part of such a great group, community and state."
