2015 Visitor Spending: $91.3 million
Record visitor spending marks 7th straight year of growth for DeKalb County

In DeKalb County, visitor spending hit an all-time high of $91.3 million and contributed $7.47 million in state and local tax revenue in 2015.

"Tourism continues to make a significant impact on our economic wealth in DeKalb County. $91. 3 million in visitor spending shows just how important investing in tourism marketing is to our local economy. 2015 marks the 7th consecutive year that visitor spending has increased. We are up 3.3% over 2014," stated Debbie Armstrong. "We thank all our financial stakeholders and hospitality partners for their support. Local investment is the key to our continued success."

  • DeKalb County Visitors Guides are distributed throughout the Illinois area, to out-of-state groups interested in visiting DeKalb County, and four toll road oasis locations: Belvidere, DeKalb, Hinsdale and O'Hare. 
  • The Visitors Guide is also available on the NIU Campus to new students and their families and at kiosks at the NIU Convocation Center and NIU Homes Student Center

DeKalb Kite Fest 

The 2016 DeKalb Kite Fest is September 11
from 11am - 4pm at NIU's North 40 (corner of Lucinda Ave and Kishwaukee Dr.)! 

Everyone will enjoy seeing the giant inflatable kites, dancing kites, and fighting kites high up in the sky. New this year is  Team Sky-FX, a quad kite flying team that will have you amazed at their intricate stunting ability. 
  • $3 parking, cash only - in and out privileges all day.
  • Bring your own: sunscreen, chairs, blankets, food/snacks/non-alcoholic beverages, and kites
  • FREE kite candy drop and kite making craft for the kids
  • Food, beverages and kites will be available for purchase.

New Event: DeKalb/NIU Art Walk 
24 Participating Venues in DeKalb Arts and Entertainment Corridor to Feature Artists and Art Exhibitions   
  • 5-8pm: All participating Downtown, Community and NIU venues will be free and open to visitors and shoppers.
     
  • 8-10pm: Musical Performances at the Egyptian Theater
    • "Art of Swing," NIU Jazz Orchestra, directed by Reggie Thomas 
    • "Serious Fun," NIU Steelband, co-directed by Liam Teague

Come visit and celebrate the hospitality and culture of our DeKalb/NIU art venues, downtown businesses and community organizations. There is an exciting line up of artists and museum exhibitions; preview all listings and features online at  dekalbareaartscouncil.org

After an early evening of art viewing and shopping (5-8pm), top off your evening out with the "Art of Swing" by the NIU Jazz Orchestra and  "Serious Fun" by the NIU Steelband starting at 8pm at the Egyptian Theater.
 
Note: All 5-8pm Art exhibitions and viewings are free to the public.   The NIU Jazz Orchestra and NIU Steelband performances tickets are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.

DeKalb County Tourist Attractions Featured in Travel Illinois Magazine
Whiskey Acres is Illinois Made and Jonamac Orchard is a Fall Sweet Treat

The Illinois office of Tourism launched the Illinois Made program earlier this year. It features Illinois artisans, innovators and makers following their passions in Illinois. Whiskey Acres is the 2nd featured crafter in the Travel Illinois Magazine!

The DCCVB is very excited that two of the County's fall attractions are featured in the state's top promotional piece.

Digital editions that are available to download at enjoyillinois.com/travelguides. The magazines are also available across the state at seven tourist information centers other CVB offices.  

NIU Homecoming 2016
Be part of the 2016 Festivities & Parade!
The start of a new school year at NIU means that NIU Homecoming 2016 is right around the corner. Happening October 16-22, this year's theme is "Huskies Through The Decades," and the Northern Lights Homecoming Parade will delight parade goers for its second year on Thursday, October 20th.
