February 19, 2016 Why American Students Are Flocking to Germany - and Staying
DAAD recently made it into the national spotlight when NBC News covered the growing trend of students making their way from the United States to Germany. In addition to interviewing American students who cite the low cost of education as a major draw to Germany, NBC reached out to DAAD Secretary General Dr. Dorothea Rueland, who also weighed in on this development. She notes that "Germany and its universities have quite a good reputation in the United States...and we have a huge increase in courses taught in English and this obviously makes it easier for American students to channel into the German system." Germany Today Deadline Approaching DAAD invites representatives from universities, research institutions, and funding agencies in the United States and Canada, as well as colleagues from the fields of education policy and politics to participate in the 2016 “Germany Today” Information Tour. With the theme German Higher Education Institutions and Their Training Strategies for a Changing Employment Market, this year’s tour will focus on initiatives to develop professional opportunities at a national and international level while providing an overview of Germany’s higher education landscape. Funding opportunities, internationalization strategies, and the potential for co-operation between German and North American institutions will also be discussed. Participants will visit institutions in Stuttgart, Heidelberg, Darmstadt and Bonn to engage in active discussion, gain new professional perspectives and share their own expertise. The information tour will take place June 12 18, and all program-related costs in Germany (accommodation, domestic travel, most meals) will be covered by DAAD. In the summer of 2016, the European University Viadrina in Frankfurt (Oder) is going to offer its renowned Summer School again. IIE, in partnership with Go Overseas and AIFS Study Abroad, CET Academic Programs, IFSA-Butler, STA Travel, is pleased to announce the launch of a nationwide campaign asking everyone who has ever studied abroad to encourage college students to study abroad by the time they graduate. The #GoStudyAbroad campaign is part of IIE’s Generation Study Abroad, a five-year initiative to double the number of students who study abroad by the end of the decade. DAAD is a commitment partner of IIE's Generation Study Abroad campaign. The contest calls on study abroad alumni to pay it forward by nominating U.S. college students to #GoStudyAbroad by the time they graduate. Teachers, faculty, mentors, students, and community members can also nominate someone that they would love to see benefit from the incredible experience of study abroad. Nominees could win a $10,000 scholarship for study abroad and nominators are eligible to win travel prizes. The contest runs from February 16 to March 31,2016.
