Sept. 13 event spotlights expanding region's workforce potential through STEM-based education, collaboration
  

Join K-State Olathe from 5-7 p.m. on Sept. 13 for a free event that brings together industry and community leaders, employers, employees, educators and students in greater Kansas City to discuss fulfilling Kansas City's demand for professionals in the STEM fields.

"Expanding Potential in Greater Kansas City: An Introduction to the Professional Science Master's Degree" will highlight how K-State Olathe's newest degree -- the Professional Science Master in Applied Science and Technology -- is helping meet the region's demand for well-qualified STEM professionals and giving individuals the skills needed to take the next step in their careers.

The evening begins at 5 p.m. with an information fair, appetizers and refreshments. At 6 p.m. a moderated panel will discuss developing a STEM-based workforce for greater Kansas City's continued growth and success. Networking with industry leaders will follow. Information for prospective students will be available.  Prospective graduate students considering a K-State Olathe program will receive a graduate school application fee waiver.
Economic growth focus of moderated discussion panel

The Sept. 13 event consists of a moderated discussion panel, which begins at 6 p.m. National and regional leaders from industry, business, government, economic development and education will discuss creating a STEM-based workforce that drives economic growth for the greater Kansas City area. Industry leaders discuss Kansas City workforce needs at degree roundtable

As a precursor to the Sept. 13 event, 28 industry leaders from Kansas City's bioscience, animal health and food production sectors met at K-State Olathe to discuss the skills and training needs of greater Kansas City's workforce.
Fusing science with business skills

A Professional Science Master's degree, or PSM, is a leading graduate program designed for students to pursue advanced training in the sciences, while simultaneously developing professional skills highly valued by employers. K-State Olathe's program is recognized by the PSM National Office. 

Capstone experience, mentorship key components of PSM degree

In addition to classroom education, students use the knowledge and skills learned throughout the program to complete a hands-on project that solves a real-world problem. During the capstone, students have supervision from a faculty mentor who is an expert in the student's field. They also have the guidance of a supervisory committee and the option of being paired with a co-mentor from business, industry or government.
