Colleagues, 

August was a great month for training initiatives for the CCTR. Thanks to all who participated in the Mentor Workshop, which was a great success. Several training seminars and workshops are on tap for September as well. 

  
CCTR Hosts Inaugural Research Mentor Training Workshop


On Wednesday, August 24, the  VCU C. Kenneth and Dianne Wright Center for Clinical and Translational Research (Wright CCTR) hosted the inaugural Research Mentor Training Workshop at the VCU Rice Rivers Center. 

Through a process-based approach, 36 workshop participants explored an intellectual framework for research mentoring, which included reflecting on mentoring skills, participating in case studies to solve mentoring dilemmas, and sharing strategies for success.

Company Launched at VCU Selected for 'Best University Startups' Event at Congress

Congratulations to Arun Sanyal, M.D., professor of medicine at VCU, director of the Wright CCTR's Education Core, and president, chair and chief medical officer of Sanyal Biotechnology.

Sanyal Biotechnology has been selected for "Best University Startups 2016" by the National Council of Entrepreneurial Tech Transfer (NCET2).

VCU Establishes First Biostatistics Consulting Laboratory

The Wright CCTR is proud to support the creation of the Biostatistics Consulting Laboratory (BCL) at VCU.

The BCL offers assistance with study design, data analysis, and biostatistical education services free of charge to members of  VCU and  VCU Health System

It will complement the biostatistics services already offered by the Center by allowing Wright CCTR biostatisticians more flexibility to keep up with the ever-growing demand for their services.

Monthly Staff Meeting - Sept. 8

The September staff meeting will take place  Thursday, September 8 at 10:00 a.m. in  the RAM building, 2nd Floor.

Rose O'Toole, VCU's regional CommonHealth ambassador, will lead a presentation titled "Get a Grip on Joint Pain," where she will offer strategies for protecting your joints.
The NIH Big Data to Knowledge program has announced the BD2K Guide to the Fundamentals of Data Science, a series of online lectures given by experts from across the country covering a range of diverse topics in data science. 

This course is an introductory overview that assumes no prior knowledge or understanding of data science. The series starts Friday, September 9 and will run once per week all year from noon to 1:00 p.m.

Discovery Dialogues: Discoveries that Target Cancer Cells
- Sept. 12

Please join the Wright CCTR for our Discovery Dialogues seminar titled, "Discoveries that Target Cancer Cells." Eun Lee, Ph.D., assistant professor of Obstetrics and Gynecology for the VCU School of Medicine, will present the seminar on Monday, September 12 from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Main Hospital's Learning Center (first floor, across from the cafeteria).

Faculty, staff, students, patients, and families are invited to attend.  Light refreshments will be served.

The Wright CCTR invites you to attend the next chapter meeting on Monday, September 12 from 11:00 a.m. to noon at the McGlothlin Medical Education Center, Room 11-102. 

Mark Hochhauser, Ph.D., readability consultant and IRB member, will present a webinar on e-consents and usability issues from the 2015 SoCRA 24th Annual Conference. The presentation will be followed by a discussion of the subject matter.

Show Me the Money - Sept. 14

The Wright CCTR and Tompkins-McCaw Library present the first of their 2016-2017 lunch research seminars titled, "Show Me the Money," on Wednesday, September 14, from noon to 1:00 p.m. in the Tompkins-McCaw Library, Room 109. 

Pamela Dillon, Pharm.D., research liaison for the Wright CCTR's Research Innovator, will discuss how to position yourself to be competitive for funding and identify appropriate research funding for your career and research interests. 

Participants may bring their lunch. Drinks will be provided.
