Works Progress Administration exhibition at Oakland University, Sept. 9-Oct. 9
The DIA is loaning 20 prints created by Works Progress Administration artists for an upcoming exhibition at Oakland University Art Gallery, located at 71 Wilson Blvd., 208 Wilson Hall, Rochester. The free exhibition features 63 prints from the 1920s through the 1940s, a prolific era for printmaking. Among the DIA loans are Buried Treasure by Mabel Dwight, Miner Joe by Elizabeth Olds and Night Coach by Oscar Weissbuch. 

Director's Cut talk, Sept. 14, 6:30 p.m.  
Get to know DIA Director Salvador Salort-Pons as he talks about his background, a brief history of the museum and his vision at the Pontiac Creative Arts Center, located at 47 Williams St. The audience will have the opportunity to ask questions following the talk. The event is free and open to the public.
 
Beverly Hills Flashlight tours, Sept. 22, 7:30 p.m.
Tour the Inside|out reproductions after dusk in Beverly Park, located at 18801 Beverly Rd. Meet at the park entrance at 7:30 p.m. BYOF-bring your own flashlight! 

Ofrenda call for proposals, now through Sept. 28
Calling all artists! The DIA, in collaboration with the Mexican Consulate of Detroit, extends an open call for proposals for the creation of ofrenda altars, offerings, honoring the life and memory of lost loved ones, to be exhibited as part of the DIA's celebration of Día de Muertos (Day of the Dead). Proposals are due by end of the business day Wednesday, Sept. 28, and will be reviewed by a selection committee of DIA staff and local community members of Mexican heritage. Lake Orion Senior Luncheon Series, Wednesdays, noon-1:30 p.m.  
The Orion Center, located at 1335 Joslyn Rd., is hosting a senior luncheon series featuring talks about the DIA's collection on select Wednesdays from noon to 1:30 p.m. Guests will learn about various aspects of the DIA's collection over lunch. Talks are for people ages 50 and older and require advance registration at least one week prior to the event. Admission is $6. Call 248-391-0304 ext. 305 to register. Upcoming talks are:
  • October 5: Ordinary People by Extraordinary Artists: Degas, Renoir and Friend
  • November 2: Picturing Music 
Oakland County Day, Oct. 8
The DIA is providing free bus transportation to and from the museum on Saturday, Oct. 8 for Oakland County residents. The DIA provides this service twice a year for tri-county residents. Round-trip transportation and admission is free, but reservations are required. To reserve a spot and find times and locations, call 313-833-4005 or visit tickets.dia.org.

Senior Thursdays, every Thursday at 1 p.m. 
This DIA program offers tri-county seniors the opportunity to visit the museum and enjoy programs planned exclusively for them, at no cost, every Thursday. The first Thursday of each month features a guided gallery tour; the second a lecture; the third an art-making class; and the fourth a film. During months with five Thursdays, the fifth Thursday will feature a guided gallery tour. All programs will begin at 1 p.m. The September schedule is:
  • September 8: Lecture:  The Open Road: Photography and the American Road Trip
  • September 15: Art-making: Travel journals 
  • September 22: Film: Mia Madre
  • September 29: Gallery tour: Highlights of the permanent collection

You can try your hand at sketching works of art from the DIA's world-class collection with guidance from museum studio instructors during Drawing in the Galleries, offered every Friday from 6 to 9 p.m. and Sunday from noon to 4 p.m. No experience is necessary, and all supplies are provided. Children ages 12 and younger must be accompanied by an adult.  Learn more here
