September 2016
Volunteer Recognition Celebration

We are excited to announce that we will be returning to The Children's Museum of Indianapolis on Friday, November 4 for this year's volunteer recognition event.  Please mark your calendars and more details will be included in next month's volunteer newsletter.

Welcome Savannah Ball and Andrea Groves

Please join us in welcoming Savannah Ball, the newest member of Team RMHCCIN.  In her role of Development Associate. Savannah will be working with the Young Professionals Board, managing third party events and other fundraising projects. Savannah comes to us after serving as the Communications Coordinator for the Indiana Association of Home and Hospice Care and as a Guest Services Volunteer at Limestone.

We are also pleased to welcome Andrea Groves as our new Guest Services Manger.  She comes to us from Jameson Camp where she served as Program Manager.  Jameson Camp provides disadvantaged children with both day and residential camping experiences.  Andrea is a graduate of the University of Indianapolis where she majored in psychology and minored in child and youth programs.

New Volunteer Orientation Scheduled for September 20

So many of our new volunteers credit current volunteers as the person who told them about our volunteer opportunities.  If you know someone who might be a great addition to the House, please have them contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or at 317-267-0605, ext. 225.

Additional information can also be found using this link:   RMHCCIN Volunteer Opportunities

12th Annual Pop Tab and Coin Drop

Thank you to all who came out to support the House at our 12th Annual Pop Tab & Coin Drop! On Friday, July 15 we went out to set the Guinness World Record for the most pop tabs collected in 24 hours. Although we won't find out if we officially set the record for a few more weeks, we did end up collecting nearly 6.5 million pop tabs in just under three hours!Funds received annually from the recycling of tabs typically add up to between $30,000 and $50,000.  These funds help support operating expenses of the Ronald McDonald House Charities of Central Indiana and can cover the cost of operating three rooms in the House for an entire year.

New Volunteer Opportunities

In-House Family Programming

The purpose of this position is to support the overall wellness of families, both adults and children, who are currently staying at our Limestone Street location. Wellness activities focused on ways to support social, mental, emotional and physical health. Examples include: fitness classes such as Zumba, aerobics or yoga.

Working with our Program Coordinator, Krystyna Karr, you can help develop and lead projects and programs for the families at the House. Shifts would be two hours in length and take place primarily between 6-8 p.m.

Community Resources

This position supports our families in need by facilitating access to community resources that would impact the success of their transition out of the House and back home.

Working with Krystyna Karr, there are two elements of this position.  One is to research community services and resources that guests might need and/or request.  The second is to meet one-on-one with guests to help them navigate through community resources. Examples of community resources include: connecting to housing, food pantries or utility support.

Shifts would be two hours in length and would take place in the afternoon at both our Limestone and Riley Hospital locations.

To learn more about either of these opportunities, please contact Mary Friend at [email protected] or Krystyna Karr at [email protected] or call (317) 269-2247.

Little Ways To Give To The House

If you are interested in additional ways to support the House, we could use the following items for our families:

  • Spaghetti sauce - in cans or plastic jars
  • Pop tarts or breakfast bars
  • Individually packaged snack crackers or trail mix

Mission Moment

"Thank you so much for providing this room.  We live over 1,000 miles from the hospital.  The Ronald McDonald House is a very worthy cause and relieved a great burden on our family."

Operations Update - Limestone
  • Please remember to point out that the requested per night donation at Limestone is $15 during the confirmation phone call and during check-in.  However please assure anyone that appears to be overly concerned that we never turn anyone away due to problems with fee payment.  Let the guest know that they can meet with a Guest Services Manager to discuss any problems with the nightly room donation. We do not want anyone to turn down a room because of the requested donation.
  • We have removed all the quilted mattress covers from the basement and will now be using the covers from Tempur-Pedic.
  • Just a reminder that there should always be a zippered enclosure as well as the Tempur-Pedic mattress pads on all beds.

Saying Goodbye

We recently said goodbye to our friend, Trish Sergi, who passed away on August 14.  Trish started volunteering at the RMH on Limestone Street in November of 2015 as a Greeter and helping with data entry on Monday afternoons.  She will be missed.

Trish's brother, Jack and sister-in-law, Carolyn also volunteer at Limestone.

Look Who Was Caught Rolling Out The Red Carpet

Cindy Hutchison recently caught Lori Ball, Guest Services Volunteer (GSV) at Limestone, displaying initiative and resourcefulness.

Cindy wrote: "Lori took it upon herself to call Shark regarding our broken vacuums.  Shark agreed to replace both of them free of charge.  A huge thank to Lori for going above and beyond. "

Thank you, Lori. You are appreciated!
