Now that everyone's back to school, it's time for homework.
Your assignment? When the leaves start falling,
get your house ready for the colder weather ahead.
Here's your checklist:
1. Hire a professional to tune up your heating system.
2. Replace batteries in smoke alarms and carbon monoxide detectors.
3. Review your roof for damaged, loose or missing shingles.
4. Caulk around windows and doors.
5. Clean the gutters and downspouts.
6. Divert water by adding extensions to downspouts.
7. Turn off exterior faucets.
8. Trim landscaping.
9. If you have a lawn-irrigation system, have it professionally drained.
10. Look up chimney for blockages and check to make sure damper is working. If you have a fireplace and use it regularly, have it professionally cleaned and any damages repaired.
