Tonight: Labyrinth Walk and Taizé

A Candlelit Evening of Prayer, Singing, and Reflection
|
Join us tonight for our monthly service in the style of Taizé at 7:30 p.m. in Buchanan Chapel, led by Nanette Sawyer.
The Taizé service provides an opportunity to gather in a contemplative, prayerful setting at the end of a busy week. Candles; easy-to-learn songs from various countries, traditions, and languages; and a period of silence all contribute to a time to reflect and to open oneself to God. We gather for this service on "fourth Fridays at Fourth Church."
As happens each month, the service will be preceded by opportunity to walk the labyrinth in Anderson Hall between 6:00 and 7:30 p.m. This meditative walk takes approximately twenty minutes, and members of the labyrinth ministry team are present to offer guidance for first-time labyrinth walkers.

Open House on September 8
|
Join the Center for Life and Learning as it kicks off its autumn programming with its annual Open House on Thursday, September 8 from 10:00 a.m. to 12:00 noon in the Gratz Center Commons.
Drop by then to learn more about this community for men and women sixty years and older and how to participate in its offerings of college-level courses, exercise classes, special events, and more!

Rehearsals Begin September 11
|
The Fourth Church Handbell Choir is looking for ringers! Whether you have years of handbell experience or are new to the instrument, all levels are welcome. Rehearsals are held on Sunday mornings, beginning September 11, from 8:00 to 8:45 a.m. in the Buchanan Chapel Choir Loft.
The five-octave Handbell Choir periodically participates in the 9:30 and 11:00 a.m. worship services and performs a variety of handbell literature.

An Event with Princeton Theological Seminary
|
"
Racial Justice and the Vocabulary of Faith"
will be the topic of a Saturday morning program on September 10 at 9:00 a.m. in Buchanan Chapel.
Hosted in partnership with Princeton Theological Seminary, the event will begin with Shannon Kershner framing the conversation. Yolanda Pierce of Princeton Seminary will present the keynote address and then moderate a panel discussion on the role of the church in the present racial crisis in our cities. Dr. Pierce is an Associate Professor of African American Religion and Literature at Princeton Seminary and the Director of Black Church Studies.
Panelists will include Shannon Kershner; Jonathan Walton, Professor of Religion and Society at Harvard Divinity School; Byron Brazier, Pastor of the Apostolic Church of God here in Chicago; and Timothy Knowles, Director of the University of Chicago Urban Labs.
After a time for audience questions, Craig Barnes, President of Princeton Seminary, will lead us in closing prayer.
All are invited to this timely and critically important, thought-provoking conversation on the role the church can play in the racial crisis!

There are several ways to get involved in the mission and ministry of Fourth Church. See below for details!
Current Volunteer Needs
Good listeners and typists to transcribe recorded audio interviews for the Fourth Church Oral History program.
Volunteers must be church members. Transcriptions can be typed on one's home computer or at the church using a provided laptop.
Greeters and ushers for the 4:00 p.m. jazz worship service
Pianists to play during Children's Chapel at 11:00 a.m. on Sundays
