  Well-known consciousness theorist and one of the world's foremost experts on integrative and mind body medicine Deepak Chopra, M.D. has been appointed Professor of Consciousness Studies at Sofia University in Silicon Valley. Sofia University is widely known as the original and leading higher education institution in the area of Transpersonal Psychology, one of the first areas of psychology to begin the comprehensive study of human consciousness. This summer Dr. Chopra gave the commencement address at the university, and received an honorary doctorate.

"Dr. Chopra is among the foremost theorists, and the leading public advocate for transpersonal theories of consciousness. His knowledge and understanding of this field will be a tremendous benefit to the university and its mission."

 

"I was inspired by what I saw at Sofia when I participated in the 2016 graduation ceremonies," Dr. Chopra remarked, going on to add that, "the University is one of very few research institutions in higher education that has actively worked to advance the understanding of the most fundamental realities of consciousness. I'm very pleased to join their distinguished faculty in this area."

 

Dr. Chopra's appointment will begin on September 1, 2016. He will be working with the school on a new initiative that combines Transpersonal Psychology with the scientific study of transpersonal aspects of consciousness. The university expects the collaboration to result in several new programs, including a Masters of Arts degree in Transpersonal Psychology and Consciousness Studies, as well as PhD-level research initiatives.
