Ceres Teens Make Cards for Our Clients
|
By Hollie Fortekamp
Associate Chef & Program Assistant
I'm Hollie Fortkamp, one of the staff chefs working with teen volunteers in Ceres' Sebastopol kitchen. I'm writing to share a story with you about a way our teens are growing that might surprise you.
Recently, we had one of our regular rounds of client visits to our kitchens and garden. Over the course of two weeks, a different client came to each of our daily teen education circles, when we take a brief break from work and explore topics related to food, health and community. Client visits are always touching and poignant, and after they're completed, the next week our circles focus on discussion of the visits and the emotions they bring up.
I had the privilege to be in circle with the Sebastopol teens during one of these follow-up sessions. The topic for discussion was compassion. When I asked them to define compassion, this group of young people blew me away with their thoughtful responses:
|
"
Compassion is warmly welcoming someone. You can feel sorry for someone, and not do anything to actually help. Compassion does something, it doesn't just watch
.
"
"
Compassion is when you seek to understand someone."
"
Compassion is seeing someon
e not just for their illness, but for who they really are. This (cancer, sickness) is just one small part of their lives. They won't always be here, so we should treat them with respect as an individual, and maybe they've had a really cool life.
"
"
When you just feel sorry for someone, it's like you're better than them, or maybe you're just happy that it isn't you who is sick. Compassion is like you are with them, not above them, and you get to learn and understand what this experience is like for them.
"
The next activity was creating cards to put in the client meal bags. Here are just a few of the beautiful things that the teens wrote:
Thank you for all you do to create a place where teens can learn and grow in compassion and love their communities well through nourishing food.
Chef Hollie

Digestion: Health Begins Here (Part 1)
|
by Thais Harris, NC
Nutrition Education Manager, Ceres Community Project
You are not just what you eat, you are what you absorb. Our health depends on our ability to digest what we consume, assimilate nutrients, and properly dispose of waste products. Our digestive tract is a complex ecosystem, and needs to maintain acid/base balance (for proper pH), healthy muscle tone (to ensure foods move in the right direction)
|
|
Sauerkraut: a Probiotic Powerhouse
|
|
Speaking of digestion, did you know that eating small amounts of fermented foods on a daily basis helps to maintain healthy bacteria in the digestive tract?
Sauerkraut is an easy and delicious dish you can make that aids in digestion.
