City Council to pass bylaw to Enforce Non-Compliance with Fees and Fines

September 1, 2016
A public hearing in council on Monday September 12th is intended to hear from the public for enhanced enforcement of planning bylaws. In addition to the amended enforcement bylaw will be a Development Fees and Fines Bylaw, Construction Site Cleanliness Bylaw and Business License Bylaw. Municipal and violation tickets are said to be the integral part of an enhanced enforcement program and city administration reflect that the proposed fines are competitive within the region and are high enough to encourage compliance but not so high as to be unreasonable.

Click here to read the background information that will be on the posted agenda for the September 12th council meeting.

2016 Non-Residential Property Assessments raise property taxes 20% - 65% on Property in the City
If you own non-residential property in the City of Spruce Grove you may have found a substantial increase in your property tax notice you received in June of this year.  If you are the owner / operator of the property you will have to dig a little deeper to pay to play here in the City of Spruce Grove and if you are a tenant of a commercial / industrial property and pay a triple net lease you may see an increase in your operating costs when you get your annual adjustment statement.  Many property owners that live and work here in the community were surprised when their budgets were thrown off and their accounting departments showed them their 2016 property tax assessments; many too late to appeal in the 60 day window allowable.  Property that is owned by corporates that do not live here will pass the costs down to their tenants and many city businesses have yet to feel that increase.  Hard to swallow in an economic down turn, particularly with so many other costs hitting business hard.  Soon the impact of a carbon tax, another increase in minimum wage this October, as well as a looming Alberta Labour Code review will start to impact business bottom line.
