Flood Victims Get More Time To Apply For Disaster Unemployment Assistance,
FEMA To Provide Crisis Counseling
People who lost jobs or income because of the flooding across south Louisiana have more time to apply for disaster unemployment assistance.
The Louisiana Workforce Commission announced Thursday that it was extending the application period to Oct. 14 in the 20 parishes that were part of the federal disaster declaration. The unemployment assistance is available from Aug. 14 through Feb. 18.
The aid is available to people who can't work because of flooding damage to their job site or an injury from the flooding - and who don't qualify for regular unemployment benefits.
Applications can be filed online at www.laworks.net or by phone at 1-866-783-5567. The workforce commission is encouraging people to apply through the website, warning that delays are likely if someone tries to file by phone.
In a news release Wednesday, Sen. David Vitter's office announced the Federal Emergency Management Agency will provide Louisiana with $6.8 million to fund crisis counseling for flood victims.
The release says the grant is for counseling, education and development of coping skills. The state will be responsible for distributing the money from FEMA's Crisis Counseling Assistance and Training Program.
Program funds generally go to community-based shelters, community centers and churches. In some cases, in-person services are made available at survivors' homes.
Earlier this week, FEMA announced funding for free crisis counseling for storm-affected children, administered by the state health department.

Smoked Trout, Potato & Arugula Salad
Tired of the same old lunch? This healthy salad recipe is anything but ordinary. Find nearly all of the ingredients at your Crescent City Farmers Market.
Ingredients
  • 12 ounces baby (new) yellow potatoes or fingerlings, scrubbed
  • 2 tablespoons capers, rinsed, divided
  • 1/4 cup reduced-fat sour cream
  • 3 tablespoons white-wine vinegar
  • 3 tablespoons chopped fresh dill
  • 2 tablespoons extra-virgin olive oil
  • 1 tablespoon minced shallot
  • 1/2 teaspoon freshly ground pepper
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 6 cups packed baby arugula
  • 4 hard-boiled eggs, chopped
  • 4 ounces smoked trout, skinned, boned and flaked (about 3/4 cup)
Directions
Place a steamer basket in a large saucepan with 1 inch of water; bring to a boil. Place the potatoes in the basket, cover and steam until barely tender when pierced with a skewer, 13 to 15 minutes, depending on size.
Meanwhile, chop 1 tablespoon capers and place in a large bowl. Add sour cream, vinegar, dill, oil, shallot, pepper and salt. Whisk to combine.
When the potatoes are cool enough to handle but still warm, halve them (or quarter if large) and add to the bowl along with arugula, eggs and trout. Toss gently until just combined. Serve the salad topped with the remaining 1 tablespoon capers.
To hard-boil eggs, place in a single layer in a saucepan; cover with water. Bring to a simmer over medium-high heat. Reduce heat; cook at low simmer for 10 minutes. Drain and cover with ice-cold water. Peel when cool.

NOPD to graduate newest class of officers trained in specialized de-escalation techniques
Department delivers on commitment to train 20 percent of patrol officers in Crisis Intervention Team Training by fall 2016

NEW ORLEANS--(Sept. 6) the NOPD will graduate the newest class of police officers trained in specialized de-escalation techniques known as Crisis Intervention Team (CIT) training. CIT is a nationally recognized 'best practices' approach in recognizing and managing behavior that may be attributable to a mental health disorder. This is the fourth class to graduate from the training since the program launched in September 2015. With this graduation, the NOPD has delivered on a commitment to train at least 20 percent of the patrol officers by August 2016 as part of the federal consent decree. NOPD will continue to train officers in CIT to exceed this 20 percent threshold and provide the best possible crisis response to the community.

CIT officers received 40 hours of specialized training from mental health experts focused on techniques and best practices for minimizing the use of force against individuals in crisis due to mental illness or a behavioral disorder. Training includes lectures from mental health experts as well as on-site visitation and exposure to mental health facilities, intensive interaction with individuals with a mental illness and scenario-based de-escalation skills training. CIT officers are then assigned to each police district to respond to and de-escalate mental health and other crises.

SEPTEMBER 6 - NATIONAL COFFEE ICE CREAM DAY - NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY -  NATIONAL ANOTHER LOOK UNLIMITED DAY

National Coffee Ice Cream Day September 6
NATIONAL COFFEE ICE CREAM DAY
If you are a coffee lover and a lover of ice cream, then this is the food holiday you look forward to every year.  National Coffee Ice Cream Day is observed annually on September 6th.
This creamy and caffeinated ice cream treat is sure to satisfy your taste buds.  There are those that are not a fan of cold coffee. However, when it is whipped with cream and sugar, it takes on a magical taste of its own.
Coffee ice cream has been around for many years.  In 1869, coffee ice cream was used in a parfait and a recipe appeared in a 1919 cookbook for an Egg Coffee, consisting of cream, crushed ice and coffee syrup.

HOW TO OBSERVE
To celebrate National Coffee Ice Cream Day, try one of the coffee ice cream dessert recipes:
Use #CoffeeIceCreamDay to post on social media.

National Read a Book Day September 6
NATIONAL READ A BOOK DAY
National Read A Book Day is observed annually on September 6th.  On August 9th, we all celebrated National Book Lovers Day.  While these bookish days may seem similar, National Read a Book Day invites us ALL to grab a book we might enjoy and spend the day reading.
Don't keep it to yourself.  Share the experience!  Read aloud either to children or to grandparents.  Read to your pets or to your stuffed animals and plants.
Reading improves memory and concentration as well as reduces stress.   Older adults who spend time reading show a slower cognitive decline and tend to participate in more mentally stimulating activities over their lifetime.  Books are an inexpensive entertainment, education and time machine, too!
HOW TO OBSERVE
Sit back, relax and read a book.  Use #ReadABookDay to post on social media.

National Another Look Unlimited Day Day After Labor Day
NATIONAL ANOTHER LOOK UNLIMITED DAY
National Another Look Unlimited Day is observed annually on the day after Labor day.
Are you feeling green?  Have you collected more things around your house and need another "spring cleaning"? National Another Look Unlimited Day would be the perfect day. Spring cleaning meet Fall cleaning.  It is a day dedicated to taking a look around your house and ridding it of the excess of things you have accumulated.
It's time to clear out the closets.  Purge the attic.  Donate toys and clothes.  Tidy up, clean up and put to use those items that have  purpose!
Don't just trash it, though! May items have multiple uses.  Repurpose an item that is no longer being used for its original job.  Don't know how to use it?  The internet probably has a solution.  Old cribs have been repurposed into arts and crafts centers.  Broken dressers into books shelves or wine racks.  Your trash may be someone else's treasure.  Donate or sell it so someone else can give it new life.
HOW TO OBSERVE
To celebrate National Another Look Unlimited Day, find at least one thing to donate, gift or reuse.  Have a clean and green day! Use #AnotherLookUnlimitedDay to post on social media.

  • garlic cloves, sliced
  • 1/8 teaspoon crushed red pepper flakes
  • 1 (8-ounce) zucchini, halved lengthwise and cut into 1/2-inch thick pieces

Ogden After Hours - Tank and the Bangas in the Patrick F. Taylor Library
September 8 @ 6:00 pm - 8:00 pm

c133d5f1-9c1c-4ca0-ab10-82242050881f
Tank and The Bangas were formed in 2011 at an open mic set in New Orleans, centered at a shot gun house, Jerk Chicken Sam'iches and a drum set. Instantaneously this group knew that they had something that stirred crowds that cried out for original music from them. If you're from New Orleans, you know all the ingredients to make a good gumbo. Your seasonings have to mix well, your roux has to be thick, and your meat has to be cut to perfection. Tank and The Bangas are what you call a great gumbo! Originating in New Orleans, Tank and The Bangas have all the qualities that relates them, to the city that birth them but a flair that separates them as well. Their performances range from being "One of the most energetic shows you'll ever see" to "A gospel tent in Mississippi". Rummaging through their sound like a thrift store hippie, you'll find the Bangas to provoke a musical reference of Rhythmic Soul and Spoken word among other genres such as Rock, Gospel, Funk, and Folk. Combining the various musical technique among the Bangas, coupled with the instilling play on lyrics from the lead vocalist; Tank and The Bangas have quilted a unique sound that singles them as one of the most distinctive groups to come out of New Orleans.
Group members include Tank/ Lead vocalist/Norman Spence on Bass/keyboard, Joshua Johnson/Drums, Merell Burkett/keys/ Nita Bailey/Percussion; and various other Bangas.
"It is no surprise that Bangas fans have demanded a formal album, given their track record of knock-out, floor-burning live performances. If their live show delivery has been accurately captured on this disc, then Think Tank should be one of those timeless debut albums savored by avid music fans even years, and many albums, later. Yes, that's a tall bill to fill, but the sheer potential of this band's classic status is just that real." - Offbeat Magazine

Flood City
September 1 - 17 | NOCCA Nims Black Box Theatre
WORLD PREMIERE

In Johnstown, Pennsylvania in 1889, The Great Flood has destroyed a bustling steel town, and left a motley crew of survivors and surveyors to clean up and rebuild. Meanwhile, at a bar in Johnstown a century later, laid-off steel workers wax metaphoric about past lives and future ambitions. Traversing time and space, Reisman's distinctly hopeful dark comedy depicts the destruction, rebuilding, and adaptation of an American city. Award-winning director Mark Routhier and an ensemble of seven bring Reisman's unorthodox story to life this September at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts (NOCCA).
Performance Schedule:
Thursday, September 8 at 8pm
Friday, September 9 at 8pm
Saturday, September 10 at 8pm
Sunday, September 11 at 2pm
Wednesday, September 14 at 8pm
Thursday, September 15 at 8pm
Friday, September 16 at 8pm
Saturday, September 17 at 8pm
We ask that, in light of the recent historic flooding in our home state of Louisiana, you consider donating to the flood relief efforts through the NOLA Pay it Forward Fund run by the Greater New Orleans Foundation. •
  • Southern Food & Beverage Museum1504 Oretha Castle Haley Boulevard New Orleans, LA, 70113 United States
Southern Food & Beverage Museum Founder and President, Liz Williams, is a New Orleans native with Sicilian roots. As a young girl, Liz learned not only the Sicilian culinary traditions, but the Creole twist on Sicilian food, now known as Creole Italian.
Join Liz and SoFAB's Director of Culinary Programming, Jyl Benson, every Thursday from 11 AM to 1 PM in the state-of-the-art Rouses Culinary Innovation Center by Jenn-Air for their new Creole Italian lunch demonstration and cooking class. The demonstration class offers an in-depth look into how to create delicious Creole Italian dishes that can be found nowhere else in the world, along with their cultural and historical traditions.
We provide the authentic recipes for you to take home, but in class we'll show you how to "cheat' and make them a little easier. Not only will you enjoy the lunch cooked right in front of you, but you'll also learn the fascinating history of the Sicilian people in New Orleans. Fun fact: At one time there were more Sicilians in New Orleans than in any other place (other than Palermo)!
The atmosphere for the class is relaxed, fun, and friendly, and guests are encouraged to seek advice on cooking, dining, and local interests from Liz and Jyl.
The $40 menu includes:
  • Italian Olive Salad with Fresh Lemon and Provolone
  • Creole Red Gravy with Sweet Italian Sausage and Pasta
  • Made to Order Snoballs
  • Garlic Bread
  • Iced Tea

Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together
by Stephenson Palfi
"Piano Players Rarely Ever Play Together" is a 76 minute portrait of three great New Orleans pianists and how they influenced one another's music. The three keyboard artists - Tuts Washington, Professor Longhair and Allen Toussaint - are featured playing together for the first time in a rehearsal for a joint concert. The rehearsal turned out to be the only time the three ever played together, because Professor Longhair died two days before the scheduled performance. The documentary takes viewers through the very personal and sacred New Orleans tradition of a jazz wake and funeral procession for Professor Longhair, which was taped at the encouragement of his widow, Alice.
Stevenson's widow Polly Waring will attend for Q&A

MOZART - REQUIEM
Benefit Concert for Baton Rouge Flood Victims

Sunday, September 11, 7:30 pm

at Trinity Episcopal Church
1329 Jackson Avenue
New Orleans, LA 70130

Benefit Concert for Baton Rouge Flood Victims, with a performance of the Mozart Requiem by orchestra musicians combined from both the Louisiana Philharmonic and Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestras, with a chorus of singers from the New Orleans and Baton Rouge regions, vocal soloists Amy Pfrimmer, Daveda Karanas, Tyler Smith, Terrance Brown, and conductor Paul Mauffray at Trinity Episcopal Church.

General admission is by donation, and your tax deductible donation checks can be made to the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra (with "Musician Relief Fund" in the memo line). Many of the BRSO musicians and chorus members have faced significant losses in the recent flood including their homes, cars, instruments, and some affiliated with the orchestra have lost nearly everything.

We in New Orleans can relate first-hand to these experiences, and many of us have faced similar circumstances related to Hurricane Katrina. In a show of solidarity and empathy we reach out to our colleagues with this performance of the Mozart Requiem. This is a moment for our community of musicians to acknowledge the transient nature of life and to mourn the loss of our neighbors.

Instrumentalists as well as singers from the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and Chorus will be joining musicians from the Louisiana Philharmonic to perform this famous Requiem which is the final work Mozart was attempting to complete at the time of his early death.

A few quotes from the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra about their situation:

            - "One of our violinists, a recent graduate of LSU School of Music, lost his vehicle to the flood while he was performing out of the country."

            - "One of our flutists had her flute submerged in the flooding of Runnels School (A private school that suffered a catastrophic level of flooding) and also suffered personal losses at her home."

Restaurant Week New Orleans
Save the Date: September 12 - 18, 2016
In New Orleans, we live to eat; it's part of who we are. The culinary industry is a cornerstone of the city's identity and should be embraced by locals, as they play a vital role in supporting our restaurants, the culinary talent behind them and celebrating the way of life for which New Orleans is widely known. Restaurant Week New Orleans seeks to keep all of the city's restaurants top-of-mind with consumers while also building an emotional connection with the local food-loving community. The result-a larger number of locals dining out more often and fueling the movement through referrals and word-of-mouth to increase patronage across every type of restaurant.

THE 8th ANNUAL NEW ORLEANS BURLESQUE FESTIVAL

From September 15 - 18, the most glamorous and eye-popping burlesque dancers from around the globe come together to perform over four nights in sultry New Orleans, to shimmy, shake, bump and grind.

The New Orleans Burlesque Festival has established itself as one of the top burlesque festivals in the world. An estimated 2500 people are in attendance over the weekend. Besides performers from across the USA, this year's fest will feature dancers from New Zealand, Australia, London, Tokyo, and Canada.

A highlight of the festival is the Queen of Burlesque competition in which eight of the top classic striptease dancers compete for the title, accompanied entirely by a live jazz band. Sold-out every year, the competition is moving to bigger venue this year, The Civic. The annual Bad Girls of Burlesque, which is now a monthly show at House of Blues, is a highly anticipated showcase featuring an array of kick-ass women from all over the world.

Besides showcases, the festival includes an opening and closing party. Celebrated guests of the festival include Rita Alexander the Champagne Girl and Leslie Zemeckis. Rita Alexander was a headline attraction on Bourbon Street in the 1960s. Leslie Zemeckis authored the book, Behind the BurlyQ and Goddess of Love Incarnate: The Life of Stripteuse Lili St. Cyr.

Celebrate this classic form of adult entertainment that made Bourbon Street famous worldwide.

  • The first ever Beignet Fest will be held Oct. 8 in Lafayette Square.

Just when you thought the city couldn't possibly dedicate a festival to yet another indigenous food item, a local nonprofit has announced the lineup for the first-everBeignet Fest this fall.

The festival - which aims to raise funds for children with autism - takes place October 8 at Lafayette Square and will feature both sweet and savory versions of the iconic fried dough confection from local restaurants.

Local couple Amy and Sherwood Collins hatched the idea for the festival to donate proceeds to the Tres Doux Foundation, which they founded to help raise awareness and funds for autism programs in New Orleans.

"Through our journey with our son, Liam, who is on the autism spectrum, we found out there's a gap in accessible programming for kids on the spectrum, and we wanted to change that,"Amy Collins said in a prepared statement. "So, we are doing what we do best - creating and managing a festival with amazing food and music!"

The list for food vendors so far includes - of course - Café Du Monde, Ye Olde College Inn, The Ruby Slipper, Café Beignet, New Orleans Coffee & Beignet and Bread & Circus, of Lafayette. Curiously. Morning Call doesn't appear to have joined the lineup just yet.

While the festival is free and open to the public, apportion of the proceeds from food and beverage sales will go toward the foundation. Guests will be able to cast their vote for a favorite in several categories including best sweet, savory, most original and all around crowd favorite.

The musical lineup includes Big Sam's Funky Nation, John "Papa" Gros Band, Los Po-Boy-Citos, The Confetti Park Players Children's Chorus and
Alexandra Scott.
