UPSTATE PROFESSIONAL PLANNERS GROUP:
MEETING RECAP
Upstate Forever, Furman's Riley Institute, and Ten at the Top are leading a study of growth and development alternatives for the Upstate. The analysis will include a comprehensive assessment of current policies, market forces, and development preferences to illustrate how continued growth under the trend scenario might influence the cost of government, shape infrastructure, support and/or limit economic development initiatives or impact the environment.
Ten at the Top's Upstate Professional Planners Group has been asked to serve as the Technical Advisory Committee for the project and met for the first time on August 24th to learn more about the project and how they will be relied upon to validate the scenario planning process, verify data, identify key planning themes and case study locations, and review draft deliverables.

The success of this project will also rely on input from the community. This input will be gathered during several focus groups which will be hosted at Greer City Hall. You are invited to attend one of the meetings below to provide your input.

SUBSTANCE ABUSE PREVENTION WORK GROUP:
MEETING RECAP
Many organizations throughout the Upstate have been able to make a positive impact in the lives of Upstate children by partnering with school districts and working directly with students. During the August 25th Substance Abuse Prevention Workgroup meeting attendees learned about two successful programs in the Upstate:

Cathy Breazeale, Director of Prevention Services for Behavioral Health Services of Pickens County, explained the various prevention programs offered at her organization. BHS of Pickens County works with the school district and the superintendent to reach children from elementary school with red ribbon programs to high school with a Pickens County Youth Board.

Cpl. Charles Mulwee with the Oconee County Sheriff's Office presented about his elementary mentoring program with the help of Ms. Evie Hughes with the School District of Oconee County. Through a relationship with the school district, Cpl.
Mulwee is able to mentor elementary age boys in ten different schools. Through mentoring, day camps, and other methods, Cpl. Mulwee is able to prevent childhood substance abuse and other negative behavior.
