news Three Faculty Members Awarded NIH Grant
Three University of Maryland School of Nursing faculty members have been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health  to fund the University of Maryland, Baltimore's Omics Associated with Self-management Interventions for Symptoms Center . Susan G. Dorsey, PhD '01, MS '98, RN, FAAN, professor and chair , Department of Pain and Translational Symptom Science ; Cynthia L. Renn, PhD, MS '98, RN, associate professor; and Barbara Resnick, PhD '96, RN, CRNP, FAAN, FAANP, professor and  Sonia Ziporkin Gershowitz Chair in Gerontology will receive more than $2.7 million over five years.

Dean Named to Maryland Commission on Climate Change

Dean Jane M. Kirschling, PhD, RN, FAAN, was recently appointed to the Maryland Commission on Climate Change (MCCC). The MCCC is charged with advising the governor and general assembly on ways to mitigate the causes of, prepare for, and adapt to the consequences of climate change and maintaining and strengthening the state's existing Greenhouse Gas Reduction PlanLearn more.
School of Nursing Staff Members Named Back-to-Back UMB Employees of the Month

Rachel McKelvey,  academic coordinator, was awarded the UMB July Employee of t he Month. She was honored for pioneering many guidelines and practices to better facilitate the new systems and processes put into place as the School transitions from paper to electronic documentation. In addition to expediting the student turnaround time for documents uploaded into the compliance vendor, Castle Branch, from 72 hours to less than an hour and a half, McKelvey has enhanced communications and collaboration.  McKelvey  began working at the School of Nursing in 2014.  Read more .

Dave Lowing , network systems engineer, was awarded the UMB August Employee of the Month.  Lowing began working in the School of Nursing's IT department in 1988, offering desktop computer support and audiovisual assistance. In the past year, Lowing has completed approximately 700 recordings, spanning lecture captures, webcasts, voiceovers, and teleprompter work. Of the videos, approximately 80 percent were academic, 10 percent were special events, and 10 percent were for grants/contracts.  
Lessans Awarded NIH Grant to Research Role Weight Plays in Outcomes of Breast Cancer Treatment

Sherrie Lessans, PhD '10, RN, assistant professor and director, Clinical Nurse Leader option, has been awarded a grant from the National Institutes of Health's National Institute of Nursing Research to fund the project Modeling Post-Menopausal Chemotherapy-Associated Weight Gain. Lessans' award is for $460,817.  Read more.
Three School of Nursing Faculty Members and an Alumna Elected to NPAM Board

Three University of Maryland School of Nursing faculty members and an alumna were recently elected to the Nurse Practitioner Association of Maryland's Board of Directors for the 2016-17 term. Faculty members  Roseann Velez, DNP, FNP-BC, assistant professor; Veronica Gutchell, DNP '13, CNS, CRNP, assistant professor; and Ameera Chakravarthy, MS, BSN '02, CRNP, clinical instructor; and alumna Sonia P. Brown, DNP '15, MS '99, ACNP-BC, were selected to the board. Read more.
School Seeking Adjunct Professors and Preceptors

UMSON is seeking adjunct faculty members and preceptors. The School hires adjunct faculty members to provide clinical instruction to entry-level students in the Bachelor of Science in Nursing program and the Clinical Nurse Leader master's option. UMSON is also seeking skilled, experienced preceptors to work with students as they complete their clinical requirements. Learn more
Welcome New Faculty and Staff

Shaunta Chapple, MS, clinical and lab instructor, has joined the Department of Organizational Systems and Adult Health. She serves as a Hepatitis C nurse coordinator for the University of Maryland Medical Center and the School of Medicine's Gastroenterology and Hepatology department, and works per diem in long-term care and medical-surgical. Chapple earned a master's degree with a concentration in nursing education from Stevenson University, and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Coppin State University.
 
Alfred Guante will join the School of Nursing as an assistant director of admissions beginning Sept. 19. He comes to the School from the University of Connecticut where he served as coordinator of educational outreach. Guante earned a bachelor's degree in Spanish from the University of Connecticut, and is currently pursuing a master's of education degree in higher education administration from Northeastern University.
 
Sarah Hokenmaier will  join the School of Nursing as program director of Family and Community Health, effective Oct. 3. She comes to the School of Nursing from the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene where she served as deputy director for the Center for Cancer Prevention and Control. Hokenmaier earned both her master's and bachelor's degrees in public administration and biology, respectively, from Grand Valley State University.
 
Rebecca Kelley, MS, has been appointed clinical instructor and assistant director for the Clinical Simulation Lab. She joins the School of Nursing from the State of Maryland Department of Health where she served as a program supervisor.  Kelley earned a master's degree in nursing from the University of Southern Indiana and a bachelor's degree in nursing from Florida Hospital College of Health Sciences.

Brandie Shackelford has joined the School of Nursing as an academic coordinator. She comes to the School from Towson University where she served as an academic advisor in the College of Business and Economics. Shackelford earned a bachelor's degree in English from Frostburg State University, and is currently pursuing a master's degree in school counseling at Liberty University.

Burgess Designated Living Legend by AAN

Ann Wolbert Burgess, DNSc, MS '59, RNCS, FAAN, professor, Boston College Connell School of Nursing, a pioneer in the field of forensic nursing, and an internationally recognized leader in the treatment of victims of trauma and abuse has been designated a "Living Legend" by the American Academy of Nursing (AAN), the academy's highest honor. She will be honored at the AAN conference in October 2016. Read more.
Sabol Selected NLN Academy of Nursing Education Fellow 

Valerie Sabol, PhD '09, AGACNP-BC, CNE, FAANP, was recently selected as a 2016 National League for Nursing Academy of Nursing Education Fellow. She will be inducted at the Summit Honors Convocation in Orlando, Florida., in September. Read more.
Sharps Receives Lifetime Achievement Award 

Phyllis Sharps, PhD '88, BSN '70, RN, FAAN, professor and associate dean for Community Programs, Johns Hopkins University School of Nursing, received the 2016 Lifetime Achievement Award in Education and Research from the Association of Black Nursing Faculty in July. The award is given to an individual who has made significant contributions to nursing and/or health care for African-Americans. Read more.

Career Resources for Alumni

UMSON students and alumni can access professional career services through the Student Success Center. Services include a job board, resume and cover letter writing workshops, interviewing skills workshops, mock interviews, and online resources. There will also be a career fair to help job-seekers. It will be held at the School of Nursing on Monday, Nov. 7, from 11:30 a.m.-2 p.m.
Docents Needed for Living History Museum

The UMSON Living History Museum is seeking alumni volunteers to serve as docents. The museum is open 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Tuesday and Wednesday during the academic semesters. Docents are also needed for occasional special events, such as school tours and open houses for new and prospective students. Scheduling is flexible. Harper (Eds.), Leadership in nursing professional development: An organizational and systems focus (p. 332-355). Chicago, IL: Association for Nursing Professional Development. The chapter explores trends that will influence nursing professional development practice, identifies areas needing ongoing education, and forecasts priorities for future leaders.

Dzifa Dordunoo, PhD '14, RN, School of Nursing, was awarded a UMNursing Research Grant. She will team with alumna Debbie Danz, MS '11, BSN '79, RN, registered nurse, University of Maryland Nedical Center, on the research project "Oxygen therapy in hospitalized patients with acute on chronic heart failure."

Lily Fountain, PhD, BSN '91, RN, CNM, was awarded a UMNursing Research Grant. She will work with alumna Mary Ellen Connolly, DNP '15, CPNP, senior nurse practitioner, Pediatric Surgery, University of Maryland Medical Center, on the research project "BRIDG: Breastfeeding Resources for Initiation and Duration Grant."
