Understanding Diversity Fundamental to Medicine
Individuals in different groups have been shown to experience symptoms and disorders differently, have varying perceptions of mental health services, and have differential access to mental health care.

For example, one study showed that African-American youth are about half as likely as their Caucasian counterparts to get mental health care despite having similar rates of mental health problems, and Hispanic youth also get only half as much mental health care as Caucasians. In another study, African-American adults rated school violence and racial inequities higher on their list of child health concerns than other groups.

Although participant populations in behavioral science tend to be relatively homogeneous, attention to issues of diversity in scientific research is increasing. A special series recently published in Clnical Psychological Science communicates that diversity is fundamental to the study of science, specifically social, biological and psychological, and to the future of medicine in our increasingly diverse country. Zika in the US: What You Need to Know
The number of Zika patients in the US continues to rise as the CDC confirms there have been 1658 total US cases of Zika as of July 27 of this year. The first infections reported in the US were contracted after travel to affected regions.

But the recent cases in Miami, transmitted locally via mosquito bites, has led the CDC to issue a domestic travel warning for pregnant women, urging avoidance of all nonessential travel to the 1-mile area of active transmission north of downtown Miami.

Testing is available for any patient who requests it and the CDC recommends that all pregnant women be tested for infection at each prenatal care visit if they live in an active transmission area or if their sexual partner has traveled to one.

Many state and local health departments offer Zika prevention kits for patients and concerned patients who'd like to build their own kits should include a bed net, standing water treatment tabs, insect repellent, permethrin spray, and condoms.
