Senators Push FCC to Protect Safety Spectrum for Connected Vehicles
Sens. Edward Markey, D-Mass., and Richard Blumenthal, D-Conn., sent a letter  to the chair of the Federal Communications Commission (FCC), Tom Wheeler, last week urging him and his fellow commissioners to preserve the 5.9 GHz portion of the communications spectrum for solely connected vehicle safety technologies.
Central to the debate is the battle between vehicle technology developers and telecommunications companies, both of which want access to an increasingly crowded spectrum. Currently, most forthcoming connected vehicle safety technologies are being developed through Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC) along the 5.9 GHz portion of the spectrum. Vehicle technology developers say DSRC is the safest form of communication for vehicles because it offers high security, driver privacy protocols and low lag-time for safety messages from when they are generated by the vehicle to when the driver receives them. Telecomm companies, on the other hand, want access to that spectrum for things like emergency responder communications and the growing demand for more robust and faster cellular services.
While some of the commissioners are publicly calling for the spectrum to be shared between vehicle technology developers and other users, Chairman Wheeler has traditionally expressed a commitment to preserving the spectrum for vehicle safety technologies.
The senators' letter comes after a petition was filed with the commission from a group called Public Knowledge. The group wants the FCC to require certain cybersecurity and privacy protections be included in connected vehicle technologies before automakers and developers can release any products.
The FCC has not yet responded to either the petition or the letter, but the senators requested a response from Wheeler by Thursday, Aug. 25.
