AB 1114 (Eggman) allows Medi-Cal to reimburse pharmacist-delivered services,  such as furnishing hormonal contraceptives, naloxone, nicotine replacement therapy, travel medicines, and tobacco cessation counseling. Utilizing pharmacists to provide these services for Medi-Cal beneficiaries improves access to these vital preventative health care services.
The final regulations implementing CPhA's 2013 scope of practice legislation (SB 493) were finalized this year allowing California pharmacists to implement direct patient care services. However, despite the legal authority to provide these services, Medi-Cal law does not recognize individual pharmacists as medical providers.  AB 1114 changes the law by authorizing the Department of Health Care Services to establish reimbursement for pharmacist-provided services.
Take Action

CPhA has worked behind the scenes with key leaders in the Senate and Assembly to negotiate this bill for several months. AB 1114 will undergo rapid-succession hearings in the Senate and Assembly before the Legislature adjourns at the end of August.

CPhA will continue advocacy efforts but needs you to get involved, too.
