A Message from the Executive Director

Is it back to school time already? Summer really does fly by! I enjoyed wonderful time with family and especially my grand babies this summer. Time by the ocean truly recharges my batteries and readies me for all of the excitement to come at TLC in the fall. We are looking forward to welcoming new students and families to KTS next week. We are planning two wonderful events over the next few months. TLC's Fall Luncheon in October is always a terrific event where we highlight different services within the organization and enjoy a networking lunch at The Gaithersburg Marriott. It is hard to believe The King of the Road 5k/1 Mile Walk is in its 12th year! The race is in November and we are looking forward to a course full of runners and walkers. Also, please look out for workshops and other opportunities to engage with the organization. Thank you for your ongoing support!

TLC's Fall Luncheon

Please join us for TLC's Annual Fall Luncheon. This event is a great way to learn more about TLC and to help support our mission to improve lives and expand possibilities for individuals with special needs.

Thursday, October 13th
12 p.m. - 1:30 p.m.
$85 per person
Gaithersburg Marriott Washingtonian Center

TLC's King of the Road 5k Race

Please join us for the 12th Annual King of the Road 5k Run/1 Mile Walk on November 13th. This race is USA Track and Field certified and is a good entry-level course. It is a road race that runs around KTS (Medical Center Drive). It also hosts a family friendly 1 mile run/walk and a fun post-race party. There will be variety of winning categories. Camp Bongo

This summer KTS was proud to introduce Camp Bongo, an experiential learning camp for students in grades 2 - 7 offered the last few weeks of summer. In the morning, students engaged in a variety of multi-sensory academic activities and worked on problem solving and executive functioning skills. Every afternoon, students explored the awesome resources of the Washington, DC area through field trips and special guest visitors. These afternoons offered the perfect opportunities to work on social skills in a supported setting. Field trips included visits to Giant Food, Isaac Walton Park, Meadowside Nature Park, Morven Park-Turkey Hill Farm, Glen Echo, Teddy Roosevelt Island, National Cathedral, Butler's Orchard, The Amazing Art Studio, Great Falls Tavern Visitors Center. Join us for workshops for professionals who work with children.

Workshops qualify for Continuing Education Credit with the Office of Child Care (OCC) (Provider #CKO-30975) and the Maryland Board of Examiners for Social Workers (Category 1 Training). Topics have also been submitted to the Maryland Board of Examiners for speech-language pathologists and audiologists for Continuing Education credit. Call TLC prior to registration to confirm approval for MD BOE.

TLC's Family Hearing Center Up and Running at Asbury!

We will be opening a second location for The Family Hearing Center (FHC) at Asbury Methodist Village in Gaithersburg, Md. We are incredibly excited about this opportunity and looking forward to helping more people with their hearing healthcare. We will have a "soft opening" in August and share a Grand Opening Celebration mid-September with tours of our new Asbury facility, workshops and consultations. Stay tuned for details.

What's Next: Life After High School

This workforce development program for high school juniors and seniors focuses on preparation for work or post-secondary education. Sessions start Sept 19th at The Katherine Thomas School. Focus on career assessments, job preparation, social skills training, self-advocacy, basic literacy and computer skills, employer expectations, job searching, workplace readiness, transition services and counseling on opportunities for transition or post-secondary education. Occupational and Speech-Language FREE Screening

TLC's Occupational and Speech-Language Services are offering free screens Oct. 17 - Nov. 18, 2016, by appointment only. Take a look at these resources to determine if you child may need an evaluation for Occupational Therapy or Speech-Language Therapy. If you have concerns, let us know.
